New Life Mission was founded in 2008, and is a long-term transformational housing program serving women with children who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. While in the program, families reside at one of their four campuses for 1-2 years while they receive one-on-one case management, financial coaching, life skills and Bible study classes, access to resources for medical, dental, and mental health needs, education, tutoring, and job training.
They equip and empower their moms to set weekly goals, and they aim to address ALL areas of their lives with the goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness. For many of them, it is a generational cycle.
Currently, they have the capacity to serve 21 families on their three campuses in Melbourne. Their fourth campus, the Village, was purchased in 2021 and is the site of the former Hacienda Girls Ranch. They are completing renovations on the existing buildings on that property, which will open up capacity for them to serve another 15-18 families in the coming year.
One of the largest barriers for moms coming into their program is obtaining safe, affordable childcare. To remove that barrier, New Life Mission opened a childcare center last month called Kids Academy, which operates five days a week to care for the children in their program at no cost to their moms. In 2023, they have a goal to grow that program to offer aftercare for school-age children and tutoring.
They also have a social enterprise called the Transformed Shop. It is a sewing center where their moms work with staff and volunteers to learn cutting and sewing skills. Using upcycled denim and fabric, they create products such as drink coasters, placemats, tote bags and jewelry items that are sold at events and online at transformedshop.com. Profits are returned to the mission. A goal for 2023 is to move their small operation to a large warehouse space that exists on their new property.
Members from the New Life Mission team will be here to discuss what they are doing and what their goals are for the future in detail. This is an open event, so please invite a friend as we come together to make an impact in our local community!
