Lateral Career Paths for Emerging Professionals
Please join ITE Met Section for a panel discussion on lateral career movement. Not all career moves are about climbing the ladder. In this panel, we will be discussing the considerations of when, how, and why to make a lateral career move while learning about the experiences of our four panelists.
Our four panelists include Nicole Bucich, Senior Planning Manager of the Northeast Corridor Commission; Michael Collins, Senior Application Developer of GPI; Craig O'Donnell, Transportation Technology Developer of VHB; and Jonathan Schneider, Project Engineer of VHB. The panel will be moderated by Sofia Duran, Traffic Designer of VHB and ITE Mentorship Committee Member.

Speakers
Nicole Bucich has 30 years of experience in transportation engineering and planning. She has spent the majority of her career as a consultant focused on transportation projects in the New York City metropolitan area. Nicole joined the Northeast Corridor Commission in December 2018 and is Director of Planning, responsible for leading the development of the Northeast Corridor long-term planning effort - CONNECT NEC 2035. She is responsible for creating and facilitating a highly participatory, consensus-driven planning process with the Commission’s member organizations including members from USDOT, Amtrak and the nine member states. Nicole received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her Master of Science degree in Transportation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the former co-chair of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) NY Chapter mentoring committee and the Transportation You Committee, mentoring high school girls to promote Transportation STEM careers. Nicole is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
Michael Collins is a senior application developer for GPI with a background in transportation engineering. Mr. Collins is involved in a diverse set of projects ranging from transit signal priority for New York City’s SBS initiative to visualization of LiDAR data using a web interface. He has been involved with model building, database creation, transportation simulation, calibration, and statistical analysis to support modeling efforts with NYC. To improve processing throughput, he has developed a library of scripts to reduce manual effort in calibration. Leveraging programming skills gained in the modeling realm, he has also been involved in the development of various web and non-web applications that allow user interaction with geospatial and temporal data. Most of his work focuses on improving data processes by means of automation and integration. For the former, he creates new ways of removing the human element when entering or gathering data to improve accuracy. For the latter, combining existing technologies in innovative ways to create superior solutions.
Craig O’Donnell graduated from the University of Delaware in 2016 with Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career working as a Transportation Analyst at VHB. Over the years, his passion and interest in technology has led him to a career focused primarily in software development. He enjoys being a liaison between the transportation and software engineering worlds and hopes to continue to have an impact in both.
Jonathan Schneider is a transportation engineer with experience in both traffic and civil engineering. He is working on the LaGuardia Redevelopment program as contract staff for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and worked on ground transportation planning for Myrtle Beach International Airport and Charlottesville International Airport. Jonathan currently works for VHB in New York City. Prior to joining VHB, he worked in the San Francisco Bay Area as an airport planner, working on ground transportation and maintenance facilities for airports in both North America and South America, and worked as an office engineer for a runway rehabilitation project at Long Beach Airport in Los Angeles County. Jonathan is a licensed Civil Engineer in California and holds civil engineering degrees from The University of Maryland and UC Berkeley. His lateral moves are both geographic and within the breadths of civil engineering.

Sofia Duran is a Traffic Designer in VHB's NYC office. She is an integral part in the design of the Work Zone Traffic Control for the Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project, a design-build project that addresses the existing non-standard geometric features of the interchange and other infrastructure deficiencies. In previous years, she has assisted in the design and traffic analysis of roadway widening and other roadway improvement projects for government agencies such as the New York State Department of Transportation, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Georgia Department of Transportation. Sofia is actively involved as a member of ITE’s Mentorship Committee, a Co-chair of Women’s Transportation Seminar’s Transportation YOU, the leader of the VHB NYC office’s Inclusiveness, Diversity and Equity Alliance, and a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at New York University Tandon School of Engineering in Transportation Planning and Engineering.

novate is comprised of a diverse team from varied backgrounds. Born out of a construction company, the team has spent years on job sites as Field Engineers, Project Managers, Superintendents and Surveyors - they know their way around a job-site and excel at large scale complex construction and infrastructure projects.
Enovate performs construction management services and has a research and technology division to address solutions that don’t currently exist for problems they saw in the field and experienced first hand. The in-house development team focuses on hardware and software solutions for technology applicable to your project and, with the knowledge that each effort is unique, the team operates accordingly. Also taken into account is the teams varied backgrounds which cover different industries allowing for a wider perspective. Additionally, Enovate provides on-site field services such as surveying and monitoring for both traditional and technologically advanced elements of projects.
In December 2017, Enovate packed up their stuff and headed over to the new headquarters in Cranford, NJ.
