Dr Theunis Christoffel Botha (MBChB, Dip Ophth (SA), MMed (U), FCOphth (SA)) grew up in the city of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The surroundings of his hometown gave him a profound love for the outdoors, especially the ocean which has inspired many of his hobbies, such as swimming, rowing, and spearfishing. He also recently took up surfing alongside his wife. His holidays typically include searching for rare birds in a desolate location with the help of his loving family.

Ophthalmology is not only a job for Dr Botha but also his biggest hobby. Being a true surgeon at heart, working inside the eye is one of his greatest joys. He has followed this passion from early medical school days to today. His studies, as well as numerous tours for the blind, have taken him and his family to all of the provinces within South Africa. He has also operated in Malawi where he serviced an underprivileged community. On these tours, multiple cataract surgeries are done on a day. His highlight was operating 101 cataract blind patients in 4 days on an outreach in Limpopo.

Today he sees himself as a General Ophthalmologist doing everything within the scope of ophthalmology. But his niche remains to be cataract surgery, specifically refractive cataract surgery. He has recently added a refractive service to his repertoire by getting a modern corneal Excimer Laser. This enables Dr Botha to provide a wider spectrum of services to the community.

Theunis’ life philosophy: One should never compare yourself with someone else, but continually compare yourself to yourself and actively work on improvement while doing this.

Dr Freed's special interests include anterior segment surgery, including cataract and pterygium surgery, and comprehensive glaucoma management. Other surgical interests include refractive surgery and oculoplastics.

Dr. Irene Freed completed her MBBCh at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2008 and began her internship at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape. She served her community service year at Saldanha Sickbay, working for the military. It was during this time in 2011 that she discovered her passion for ophthalmology while volunteering at an outreach ophthalmic clinic at Vredenburg Provincial Hospital under the guidance of ocular oncologist Dr Karen Lecouna of the University of Cape Town.

In 2012, she commenced her medical officer tenure at St John’s Eye Hospital in Johannesburg and joined the registrar training program at the same hospital in 2014. She received training under renowned Professors Grant McLaren (glaucoma, oculoplastics, and orbital surgery), Trevor Carmichael (corneal specialist), and Ismail Mayet (pediatric ophthalmologist and retinal surgeon). She became a fellow ophthalmologist at the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2017 and began private practice in 2018.

Dr Freed has completed advanced courses in the administration of botulinum toxin and fillers, which she has been successfully administering since 2011. She is also interested in optimizing the medical management of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and all causes of choroidal neovascular membranes.

She is married to Robert Mark Leibrandt, a specialist physician and cardiologist, and is the mother of two boys. Her family enjoys outdoor activities.

Dr Freed has a keen eye for detail. When she is not using it to perfect her microsurgery, she uses it in the world of art, enjoying pastel, charcoal, and human-form painting.

Dieter grew up in Johannesburg as one of two sons to German parents. After completing his undergraduate degree and compulsory military conscription, Dieter moved to the Western Cape where he worked in the defence industry and subsequently completed his Master’s degree at UCT. From there he moved back up to Pretoria where he worked in research before joining the team at Tiger Wheels Manufacturing, an international supplier of automotive aluminium wheels. Here his career went from design to 24hr production management, and finally an appointment to the board as the company’s HR Director.

It was during this time that Dieter began to appreciate the inevitable interplay between people, process and technology to achieve desired outcomes, and spent much of his time training himself and his team in leadership skills, specifically servant-leadership. Dieter describes this period as one of the most rewarding growth phases in his career.

Dieter then went into the consulting industry, where he has spent almost two decades, consulting initially on business process optimisation, where he was the Western Cape regional manager for a boutique consulting firm, and then in leadership development and coaching after attending an intense program with Maxwell Leadership in the USA.

Dieter lives in a small village outside of Mossel Bay with his wife Marita, and is a keen trail and road runner. While they enjoy exploring the off-the-beaten track areas in the Garden Route, they are often found elsewhere in the country for both work and personal reasons.

Dieter believes the style and culture of future leadership depends on us all to be good role models for future leaders, and is therefore passionate in developing himself and others to be just that, which prompted him to author his book Decision Point: How the decisions you make, make you. He was introduced to the Legitimate Leadership framework in 2023 which strongly resonated with his beliefs, leading him to join the Legitimate Leadership team.

Elsabé is a B.Iuris, LL.B graduate, who also completed a degree in Psychology for Applied Professional Contexts and an Honours Degree in German. She started her career in the Department of Constitutional Law at the Free State University, where she also worked for the Centre for Human Rights Studies, managing amongst others, voter education and paralegal training projects. She was active in the establishment of a Free State Centre on Citizenship Education and Conflict Resolution. Elsabé also participated in the training of Magistrates on Diversity (with the Law, Race and Gender Unit at UCT) and the training of local government councillors and Free State Peace Committees. This experience in human rights and constitutional law stand her in good stead in her health sector work.

Elsabé is an accomplished researcher and author. She co-authored the book Employment Equity Law and chapters in Social Security Law. She has also undertaken research for, inter alia, the Taylor Committee of Enquiry into Social Security and the SA Business Coalition on HIV & Aids (SABCOHA). Elsabé is proficient at presenting at seminars conferences, symposia and congresses on all matters related to the law and ethics in health care. She has designed and presented numerous in-house training courses for clients. Retinopathy of Prematurity - An Update

Dr Steven Lapere is an ophthalmologist who specializes in disorders of the retina and in cataract surgery.

He was born and raised in Port Elizabeth and completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of the Free State in 2006. This was followed by a two-year internship at Pietermaritzburg Hospital complex and a year of community service at Kimberley Hospital. During this time, he completed his Diploma in Anaesthetics.

His ophthalmology career began at Mankweng Eye Unit in Limpopo, where he worked as a medical officer and obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology. He furthered his knowledge as a senior house officer in ophthalmology at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter in the United Kingdom. It is here that he discovered his passion for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disorders. His specialist training took place at Groote Schuur Hospital through the University of Cape Town.

On completion of his specialist training, he went on to sub-specialise with a two-year fellowship in the field of Surgical Retina, Medical Retina and Ocular Oncology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton in Canada from 2015 to 2017.

Dr Lapere has a keen interest in academic research and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. His list of research publications can be viewed here. He is a sessional consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital and a member of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa, the South African Vitreoretinal Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

When he is not treating patients, Dr Lapere enjoys spending his time cycling, hiking and kitesurfing. Cape Town offers the best of these, with optimal surroundings in all the seasons. He is married to Cherese Lapere, an anaesthetists registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital.

The OMG Big Data Project: Update, Successes & Challenges

Dr Potgieter specialises in the eye's anterior segment. He has, over the past 25 years, successfully performed many thousands of corrective eye treatments, including laser vision correction such as LASIK eye surgery and the latest SMILE Pro corrective laser treatment; cataract operations; intra-ocular lens replacements; corneal transplants; intra-corneal ring segment implants and many other types of intricate eye operations and treatments.

He is a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Pretoria, a Fellow of the College of Medicine of South Africa, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the European Board of Ophthalmology sub-speciality division in cataract and refractive surgery. He also completed a fellowship in glaucoma at the Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham UK, before his interest shifted to corneal and refractive surgery.

Dr Potgieter is the founder and director of the Optimed Eye and Laser Clinic in Pretoria, South Africa. He is recognised as an expert in the field of laser refractive corrections and refractive surgery and is thus a frequently invited lecturer at local and international scientific meetings, where he continues to impart his knowledge through the presentation of scientific papers and courses. He has directed numerous training programs for specialists in refractive eye treatments and -surgery.

Mardi Roos has been a Director of Health Management & Networking Services (Pty) Ltd ("HealthMan") since 2013. She joined the HealthMan team in 2005 and has 28 years’ experience in the healthcare industry. She has a BA Honours in Psychology obtained from the University of the Free State.

HealthMan was established in 1996 and was the first company to establish management groups for specialist and other healthcare practitioner groupings. To date it is the only company specialising in this field. Whilst the focus is on the healthcare professional, HealthMan has the opportunity to deal with all healthcare funders and administrators in order to co-ordinate the delivery of healthcare services and interaction with healthcare professionals.

Mardi consults to various medical specialist groups on setting up and managing network companies. Her responsibilities include: network support, marketing of services to health professionals, engagement with funders, coding reviews, management of medical scheme preferred provider agreements, practice cost study support, congresses, road show events, sponsorships, communication to members, practice management support, etc.

She also has a special interest in forensic audits and claims reviews. Over the last ten years, she assisted members of the various disciplines in this regard. Dr Strachan has publications in international Journals and has been an invited speaker at both local and international conferences.

Simon is the co-author of “Feeding Sense” published by Metz Press and this is in its 2nd edition.

Simon is an examiner for the CMSA FCPaed II, A lecturer on the MSc Vaccinology at Wits and an APLS Instructor.

He is the current CEO of the South African Private Practitioners Forum and a director of the Paediatrician Management Group.

Simon advocates for all children and is passionate about improving access to healthcare while maintaining standards of excellence in the provision and delivery of healthcare services. He believes that the private sector is integral to the successful achievement of universal access to healthcare.

Dr. Jan Talma is a distinguished ophthalmologist based in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa. Born on February 13, 1952, he has had a prolific career in the healthcare field, specializing in ophthalmology. He completed his medical degree (MB Ch B) at the University of Pretoria in 1975 and later pursued a Master of Medicine (M Med) in Ophthalmology, also at the University of Pretoria, graduating in 1988. He is currently in private Practice at The Pretoria Eye Institute assisted by one colleague.

He is also a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences and a member of the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC).

With a focus on ophthalmology, Dr. Jan Talma has held several prominent positions in the field. He has served as the president of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) and the South African Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (SASCRS). Dr. Talma is also a founding member and director of the South African Private Practitioners Forum (SAPPF), the Ophthalmology Management Group (OMG), and the Right to Sight Trust, a charity organization delivering eye care to those in need, and the Pretoria Eye Institute RSA largest Eye Hospital. He served at SAMA on the Private Practice Committee (PPC Chairman), BOD and Health Policy Committee for years.

Dr. Talma has received numerous accolades for his exceptional contributions to ophthalmology and healthcare. Notably, he was awarded the prestigious D J Wood Lecture Award by the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa in 2000, the highest honor bestowed upon an ophthalmologist in the country and several others like RP Foundation, Heidelberg Chamber of Business.

As an active ophthalmologist, Dr. Talma has been involved in various research projects, including studies on orbital implants and clinical drug trials. He is a sought-after lecturer and has spoken at numerous local and international conferences, sharing his expertise on ophthalmology, medical politics, ethics, and medical economics.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jan Talma's dedication to advancing ophthalmology and his commitment to community involvement have made him a prominent figure in the healthcare landscape of South Africa and beyond.

Dr. Talma is not only active in his medical profession but also heavily involved in various other areas. He is an avid scuba diver and underwater medicine instructor, having dived at numerous locations worldwide. As an active mountaineer, he has conquered peaks in Africa, the Himalayas, and the Alps. Additionally, he has been engaged in various business entities and holds positions within them.

Casper has worked in the healthcare industry for the last 30 years. He was responsible for setting up and managing the Ernst & Young Medical Practice Management Group 1988-1996. In 1995 he was appointed to head the Ernst & Young National Healthcare Consulting Group. His responsibilities included international liaison.

With the introduction of managed care to South Africa, an opportunity was identified in the structuring and management of medical specialist and other provider network companies.

HealthMan was established in 1996 and was the first company to establish such specialist and other healthcare practitioner groupings and to date is the only company specialising in this field.

Whilst the focus is on the healthcare professional, HealthMan has the opportunity to deal with all healthcare funders and administrators in order to co-ordinate delivery of healthcare services.

Digitilisation of a Practice - a Journey

Dr Dean van der Westhuizen is an Ophthalmic surgeon who trained at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He studied Medicine as an undergraduate at the University of Cape Town where he was first exposed to the art of cataract surgery which inspired him to go onto pursue a career in Ophthalmology.

He completed his six years of undergraduate training in 2009. He completed two years of internship at Victoria Hospital Wynberg. Here he was instrumental in the pediatric renovation project which was able to meet its target of renovating the pediatric wards at Victoria Hospital Wynberg. He then worked in emergency medicine and family medicine for a year during his community service. During this time, he was acknowledged by the Bertha center for social innovation and entrepreneurship, for developing e-prescribing software that was implemented at local clinics in the Western Cape, published in “The health Innovators Review”.

After registering as an independent practitioner, he moved to Kimberley to work as a Medical Officer in Family medicine and then General surgery. He then took up a Medical Officer post in the Kimberley department of Ophthalmology. Dr van der Westhuizen then completed his DipOphth(SA) in 2014 for which he was awarded the Geoff Howes medal. At this time, he regularly traveled throughout the Northern Cape on “Blind tours” doing cataract outreaches in underserved communities.

He moved back to Cape Town when he was appointed as an Ophthalmic registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital. His passion for cataract surgery continued while also developing an interest in cornea and surgical retina conditions. He was awarded a distinction for his Masters of Medicine thesis which validated a low-cost vitreoretinal surgical simulator developed at Groote Schuur hospital.

Dr Dean van der Westhuizen is married to Justine who is currently completing her Medical Specialisation as an Anaesthetist in Cape Town.

Besides his passion for Ophthalmology Dr Dean van der Westhuizen is an enthusiastic landscape photographer and self-proclaimed technologist who loves to see how technology can improve Healthcare and life in general.
