President Joko Widodo has mentioned that the three main economic agenda for Indonesia in the upcoming future are: green economy; the down streaming process of natural resources-based products; and MSMEs digitalisation. In line with his speech during the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, Indonesia is currently gearing up towards a greener economy while assuring the international community that the country is more than ready to welcome more foreign direct investment (FDI). This was shown through his entourage of high-ranking officials which combined ministries and government agencies in forestry, energy and environmental sectors along with those related to investment, infrastructure, economy and finance.
The President's speech on Indonesia's Nationally Determined Commitment (NDC) and Indonesia's ambitious target for reducing GHG opens the path for a wider conversation on how Indonesia will achieve its ambition for a greener economy, especially on energy transformation, financing through market- and non-market mechanism as well as the down streaming of natural resources. However, in order to better understand the government's goal and strategy, both UK and Indonesia's business communities should firstly understand the current situation and challenges within the Indonesian context. This roundtable discussion will talk about various persisting and future challenges for Indonesia and business communities to achieve its ambitions, plans and roadmap goals that have been set in place for this objective, and mutual l partnerships to accelerate the country's effort to mitigate climate change while remain economically competitive at the same time.
