Our instructor this evening will be renown Pysanky Master/ Artist Father Paul Luniw of St. Michael's Church in Terryville, CT. He learned the art of making Ukrainian eggs when he was a child and since then has adorned all kinds of eggs, the largest, an Ostrich egg, taking up to 7 months to complete.
The ancient Ukrainian art of decorating eggs consists of a wax resist/batik method that produces elaborate, colorful, symbolic designs. Although now mainly used to decorate Easter eggs, pysanky are much older than the Christian holiday, dating back to a time of sun worship. Adopted from the pagan tradition by Christians, pysanky were imbued with symbolism and superstition and traditions has upheld the customs and rituals of this ancient art.
