Dr. Janet Chan is a well-trained environmental scientist with experience in management of research and public engagement projects. She obtained her BSc degree in Environmental Life Science from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2003 and MSc degree in Environmental and Public Health Management with Distinction from the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in 2004. After that, she completed her PhD degree in environmental health and toxicology at HKBU in 2008. Her doctoral study focused on environmental pollution and human health risk assessment associated with primitive electronic waste recycling in mainland China. She was awarded Outstanding Postgraduate Scholarship (2007-2008) from the Hong Kong Association of University Women, and Dr. Wu Yee Sun Memorial Scholarship Fund (2007-2008) during her PhD study.

Before joining HKU as a lecturer in 2010, Dr. Chan worked at World YMCA, the headquarters of YMCA based in Geneva, Switzerland. She was the focal point on environmental and climate change issues for the organization. Working closely with the top management, she launched a programme for the youth worldwide to participate in The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15), Denmark. Apart from this, she conducted research at the Faculty of Education at HKU and the Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences in mainland China.

Currently, Dr. Chan is the Programme Coordinator of Master of Science in Environmental Management and a lecturer at School of Biological Sciences at HKU. Dr. Chan manages the programme and teaches various courses in biostatistics, research methods and report writing, environmental pollution and health risk assessment, and waste management. She also gave biostatistics training to the Environmental Protection Department and the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and provided workshops on waste reduction and its management for a programme under the Environmental Campaign Committee. As a co-investigator of various funded projects, she was awarded grants from the Environment and Conservation Fund for the International Conference on Deriving Environmental Quality Standards for the Protection of Aquatic Ecosystems (2015) and the Arts & Humanities Research Council Award, UK (2014 – 15). Moreover, she supervises over 30 students for their research or public engagement projects in waste management, environmental education and environmental pollution.

Dr. Chan is a Professional Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP), a Certified Member and a member of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong (EMAHK), and a Member of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association (HKWMA). She was an organizing committee member of the 5th World Conference on Climate Change held in London, UK (2018). To bridge academia and industry with communities, Dr. Janet served as a member of the Social Service Committee of YMCA in Hong Kong since 2017. Last but not least, she is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, demonstrating her personal and institutional commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching in higher education.

Mr. Freeman Cheung is the Greater China regional executive responsible for AECOM’s environmental management practice in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. Mr. Cheung is a seasoned environmental consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in environmental impact assessment for major infrastructure projects. He is also an air quality specialist and has completed major air quality management studies in the Pearl River Delta Region and recently the Review of the Air Quality Objectives Study in Hong Kong.

Freeman is very active in the environmental professional field and helped found the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP), the Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong (EMAHK) and the Hong Kong Institute of Environmental Impact Assessment (HKIEIA). He also serves on the CIWEM Air Technical Panel and Advisory Committee for Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong as well as part-time lecturer at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and City University of Hong Kong.

Freeman is currenty the President of the EMAHK as well as the Vice President of HKIQEP.

An environmentalist by background, Mr. CM Choi has more than 20 years’ experience in environmental management and attained the relevant professional qualifications. CM is now working at CLP Holdings Limited as Senior Manager – Environment, Group Health Safety & Environment after working in different departments in CLP. He first joined CLP in 1993. He is also the Executive Committee Member of HKIE Environmental Division and Founding Fellow of HKIQEP.

CM has actively participated in developing and implementing a wide range of environmental projects and programmes.

Dr. Maria Francesch-Huidobro is a senior environmental sustainability and CSR professional with a unique combination of experience which includes over a decade as an Executive Director of an NGO in Hong Kong, policy experience in the Hong Kong legislature combined with a decade of Asian sustainability projects and research backed up with an impressive multidisciplinary academic background covering microbiology, politics & policy, environment and sustainability.

Maria is currently Adjunct Professor at the Government & Public Administration Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is Professional Member of HKIQEP and Vice President (External) for EMAHK.

Ms. Sarah Mak has over 30 years of experience specializing in Operational Excellence and Business Processes with a focus on environmental impact. She worked as an ISO 9000 (quality), QS 9000 (automotive), ISO 14000 (environment), and TickIT (software development) auditor for 7 years and has audited almost 300 companies globally in a broad spectrum of industries in the manufacturing, service, IT, and software development sectors. She has also worked at various business units of the Dutch giant, Royal Philips, in global capacities relating to Business Excellence, as well as in the property management arm of Cheung Kong Holdings Limited.

With a strong focus on business processes, Sarah led numerous process realignment and improvement projects across global functions in different business units of Philips, at Cheung Kong, and in her capacity as consultant for her clients. Utilizing her engineering background and environmental management knowledge, Sarah has facilitated, managed, led, and participated in numerous improvement projects of different scales. Results ranged from annual financial contributions of USD $150 million in a large global initiative to cycle time reduction of 40% in a local small scale project. Her expertise is to help companies meet and exceed their legal and/or industry defined requirements while focusing on improving the bottom line and reducing impact to the environment.

A believer of giving back to society, Sarah contributes her time and serves on various committees of several professional associations. Currently, she sits on the Qualification Panel of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP). She is the Regional Executive Director of the Quality Management Division of American Society of Quality (ASQ), and a Board Member of the Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong (EMAHK). Sarah was a co-opt member of the QS 9000 Certification Council of the HKQAA (Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency) from 1998 to 2002 and served as Chair for the Hong Kong Total Quality Forum in 2006 and 2007.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Science in Environmental Management from The University of Hong Kong. She is a Founding Fellow of HKIQEP and a Certified Member of EMAHK.

Mr. Wilson Tsui is currently the Business Development Manager, Environmental Protection Division of PTC International Limited. He has been involved with selling air pollution monitoring equipment, providing turn-key air quality monitoring stations and managing research projects for clients, including utility companies, universities and government departments for more than 25 years.

Wilson is the immediate past president of EMAHK. He is also one of the founding fellows of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals (HKIQEP), which is now working with other institutions to establish the professional status of environmental practitioners in Hong Kong.

Ms. Bonnie Yip has both consulting and in-house experience in corporate sustainability and supply chain compliance. She worked in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Singapore over the years to support companies in their sustainability journey.
 
As a sustainability consultant, Bonnie specialises in sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement. Prior to consultancy, she was supplier compliance manager at a multinational retail brand, having established its training and community programmes to drive awareness and action across health and safety, labour rights, and environmental improvement in the supply chain.

Bonnie holds a Master of Science in Environmental Management (Distinction) at the University of Hong Kong, and a Bachelor of Social Science in Psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is a member of the Executive Committee at the Environmental Management Association of Hong Kong (EMAHK).
