Synopsis

Everywhere, people and their companies are talking about the Energy transition. The aim is to support the achievement of net zero emissions. McKinsey said in a 2022 report that financing to achieve net zero could be as much as $3.5 trillion per year globally. Renewables are playing a key role in this, but who and what else will be major contributors?

This complimentary seminar will showcase renewables, and also the challenges associated with them for the insurance industry, not least notable losses for some players. And then we will look to our special guest panel, including those with global and Asia responsibilities and experiences to help us understand more about what this transition means.

  • Presentations

  • Offshore Wind, including cable issues

The rest of the world, including Asia, is playing catchup to Europe, but with China now overtaking, eyes are increasingly looking to Asia for new developments.

This session will be presented by Andrew Norris of Matthews Daniels. Andrew has extensive experience both loss adjusting and underwriting offshore wind risks, going back to the big growth period in Europe as early as 2009. A big part of the offshore challenge is cables, and we will learn about the risks, their insurance, and why they present certain claims conundrums.

  • Onshore Renewables - its design standards & exposures

Photovoltaic, onshore wind, BESS, and more recently floating solar, are all common segments of onshore renewables. It's been about 20 years since they were introduced in the market. However, loss results globally have been patchy as more and more capacity enters the market. What have we learnt from new technologies and still prevailing climate changes on this sector? And what do we need to understand when underwriting new uncertainty?

This session will be presented by Young Jun Lee of QBE. Jun has 20 years of experience underwriting renewables. He will share his experience of the technology and pitfalls of renewables underwriting.
