He also has an appointment with the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at Wits University. He has several publications in spatial analysis, infectious disease modeling, public health and clinical epidemiology. Dr Maposa completed PhD in Statistics at the University of Western Cape in 2017, then went on to work as a consulting biostatistician and senior lecturer at Wits University before joining Stellenbosch University. He has an MSc and Honors in Statistics from the University of Zimbabwe as well as a double major in Mathematics and Statistics. Besides his academic involvement, Dr Maposa consults for research institutes and centers.

Spatial Methods and Applications

Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things. Spatial data is ubiquitous around us and with the proliferation and capabilities of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) like GPS only increasing and playing a huge role in survey sampling design and data collection, it is important to consider spatial analysis methods for complex survey data analysis. Ignoring spatial structure in the analysis of data exhibiting spatial dependency have serious implications on the results including biased estimates. In this seminar, we will put a spotlight on why it is important to account for spatial structure when the data generating process encodes spatial dependency. Descriptive spatial analysis and spatial modelling aspects will be discussed.
