Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of principles for business offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. They were developed by United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) in 2010. In Indonesia, however, the awareness of empowerment of women in business is still low.
In August 2018, Indonesia Global Compact Network(IGCN),UN Women, and Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE) launched a study on the implementation of Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) in top 50 companies in Indonesia. The study result shows that in general, companies in Indonesia have implemented a number of women's empowerment programs, but are still limited to following government regulations, as well as headquarters regulations for multinational companies.
In order to raise awareness and promote corporates commitment to implement WEPs, as well as address issues and concerns of practical business, IBCWE, IGCN, and UN Women establish a working group named 'Women's Empowerment Working Group' (WEP WG) together with corporates, academia and civil society organizations. This initiative is expected to focus on issues of business practice with multi-stakeholders in Indonesia. Multi-stakeholders dialogue series as one of the planned programs by Women's Empowerment Working Group will provide a space for its members to share good practices and challenges in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.
