This presentation highlights the importance of pre-operative anxiety reduction for school-aged children. Providing care to pediatric surgical patients requires additional care, an understanding of child development, and an appreciation of the specific needs of this age group.

Piaget's Cognitive Developmental Theory provided a foundational framework for understanding the developmental needs for school-aged children, and three primary methods of anxiety reduction will be discussed. Application of these methods can be applied to pediatric clinical settings to reduce anxiety for school-aged children and improve the overall perioperative experience.
