Event Details


Revised and updated in 2023 by our Maurea staff, Te Reo Maurea is as a pathway for Te Kaa Amokura (Alumni) to further their knowledge and build off their learnings from Session 1 of Te Kaa - Having fun with Te Reo Māori.


The programme runs over 10weeks, with 2 hour online sessions held every Tuesday between 9am - 11am.


Unique to Te Reo Maurea is Te Reo o te Tari (language specific to the office), which will allow you to become more confident in learning and speaking Te Reo Māori in the office and in your day-to-day life.


The programme will be facilitaed by Te Kaa team members Kelly Kahukiwa and Waimarama Hawke. Please see the course dates and times below:

    Waimarama is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Science with a Major in Psychology.

    Waimarama was raised in a political environment. The occupation of Takaparawhau was her earliest exposure to race relations in Aotearoa, particularly concerning Māori and the crown. She was raised in academic environments, supporting her family lead and facilitate sessions on Te Tiriti ō Waitangi, Tikanga Māori and Critical Education Theories. She has worked alongside a diverse group of people in creative, cultural, and educational spaces both in New Zealand and the UK.

    Waimarama loves being on stage and is passionate about the creative and performing arts as well as digital storytelling. She has performed on the regional and national haka stage with Te Manu Huia and Te Waka Huia and was recently an MC for Te Matatini.

    Kelly is a Pouako mō Te Kaa, Te Kaa Trainer who weaves his talent and experience as an artist, musician, intercultural practitioner and indigenous researcher to support Maurea to drive positive change for Māori.

    Kelly is a former Manager of Te Taua Moana Marae, where he was in charge of tikanga (protocol), tangihanga, education and facilities for the NZ Navy and Defence Force. He has a Level 5 Whakairo (carving) qualification from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and a Bachelor of Music (Jazz).

    Having completed study of Full Stack Development coding, Kelly leads the development of our online training options.

    Kelly is passionate about music, including making and playing traditional Māori instruments; to bring about a state of mauri ora (optimal wellbeing).

    Kelly’s tribal affiliations are Ngāti Io, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngai Tūhoe and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki.
