Can technology help sustainability?

Technology has the power to increase productivity, efficiency and cost savings, reduce product waste, chemicals and resources and measure, analyse and track progress, all of which can help tackle environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges.

Innovative solutions are essential to transform areas of high societal impact, including environmental protection, energy transition, decarbonization of industry and infrastructure, transport and mobility, agriculture and food, and healthcare.

In the coming decades the energy sector will undergo a complete metamorphosis. Energy efficiency needs to improve exponentially across all sectors including transport, buildings, and industry, in part driven by a rapid increase in electrification, smart grid technologies, and other emerging business models.

This webinar wishes to shed light on good practices and cutting-edge technologies that have been adopted in different industries, that can help attendees understand that innovative solutions are available, at reach, and will hopefully be conducive to the target of Vision 2050: a world where 9+ billion people can live well, within planetary boundaries, by mid-century.

Prof. Dato' Ir Dr A. Bakar Jaafar (Director and Honorary Treasurer of BCSD Malaysia, Chairman of Malaysian Green Technology & Climate Change Centre (MGTC))
3:10 PM - 3:25 PM
Leading transformations to foster a sustainable world today and tomorrow
Technology is key to drive transformations towards a better tomorrow, providing solutions that can help address the main environmental challenges such as climate change, environment degradation and biodiversity loss. By leveraging the convergence of digitalization and sustainability, there is ample opportunity to address many of the sustainable development goals and leave a lasting impact on society.

This keynote focuses on the technology created and championed by Siemens that provides innovative solutions in areas of high societal impact, including environmental protection, energy transition, decarbonization of industry and infrastructure, sustainable mobility, health and safety and others.
Jenny Bofinger-Schuster (Senior Vice President at Siemens Sustainability and Operational Excellence)
3:25 PM - 3:40 PM
Case Study: Sustainable Ports with Digital Technologies
Innovative systems and new technology radically changes the requirements for port infrastructure and increase the degree of specialization, raising the financial stakes of port investments and the need for a highly specialized workforce. PTP is sharing the strategies focusing on the present smart technology and creating a new future by being more proactive in prospering the environment for a better and smarter future.
Nilesh Timbadia (Head of Information Technology Division at Port of Tanjung Pelepas)
3:40 PM - 3:55 PM
Case Study: The power of industry coalitions to transform Urban Mobility: The case of WBCSD REmobility in India
India is home to 22 of the world’s 30 most polluted cities and vehicular emissions are a primary contributor to increasing urban pollution. Being the world’s fourth largest automobile market, India is India is yet to procure much of its vehicle fleet in this decade. If the transition to EVs is not fast enough, it would mean tens of millions of additional ICE vehicles on the Indian roads for the next 10-15 years.

REmobility is a business coalition in India of 50+ businesses from the EV ecosystem in India, representing an annual mobility demand of ~10 billion kms, with an objective to accelerate business led EV adoption. Started in 2018, REmobility has become the leading business voice on EV adoption in India. This case study session showcases the work of the coalition and how it has been able to influence the national EV industry landscape.

4:00 PM - 4:20 PM
Fireside Chat: Digitainability and SustainTech
Technology and digitalisation are essential enablers of transformation, and they need to be carefully driven to maximise their benefits. They are not a blessing in themselves, as they can exacerbate social divides, compound environmental risks
and destabilise societies. On the other hand, technology advancements can hugely impact the energy transition and decarbonization in terms of creating new opportunities to deliver efficiencies, new and more efficient renewable energy sources and ways of extracting GHG emissions from power generation and from the atmosphere.

Digitalization can fast-track the green economy by connecting people
around the world and encouraging a culture of global cooperation. Digitalization is also key to create the availability, transparency and accuracy of data essential for ESG purposes.
Adam Yee (President & CEO of Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd)
Roberto Benetello (Executive Director of BCSD Malaysia)
4:20 PM - 5:15 PM
Panel Discussion: Sustainable Mobility as the Key to Transformation for Low-Carbon Cities
One of the greatest environmental challenges we face today lies in mobility. We need a seemingly infinite network of transportation systems for societies and economy to function efficiently. However, transportation is a huge contributor to the global CO2 emissions. Creating sustainable transportation solutions is one of the greatest challenges facing cities today but also a great opportunity for the low-carbon development of cities.

The panel discusses about carbon-neutral, energy-efficient transportation options which are sustainable on both environmental and business level.
