Professor Stoffel Grobler has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, most notably in the field of workplace stress, disability and sick leave, co-authored chapters in two handbooks and presented both nationally and internationally. His current special interest lies in the field of corporate mental health and disability due to common mental health disorders. He is a strong proponent of workplace mental health programs, an accredited i-act instructor, and the lead for i-act for positive mental health. He is a psychiatrist with 20 years of experience and full-time in the public service. He has a limited private practice where he serves as an independent medical examiner for the insurance industry, performing independent psychiatric impairment assessments.


He is a psychiatrist with post-graduate qualifications including a Diploma in Occupational Health, MMed in Psychiatry (cum laude) a Fellowship of the South African Colleges of Psychiatrists and a Doctorate in Medicine. His doctoral thesis was on the topic of bipolar mood disorder, paying particular attention to unipolar mania. He is an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria, School of Public Health; Head Clinical Unit of Elizabeth Donkin Psychiatric Hospital; Associate Professor at Walter Sisulu University, Medical School.


After qualifying as a psychiatrist he spent 7 years in private practice and two years in Ireland in general adult psychiatry before returning to academic medicine. He is a South African Medico-Legal Association member and serves on the South African Medical Association's Human Rights, Law and Ethics Committee. His special interests include disability due to mental illness, psychiatric impairment assessment and biomedical ethics. Practice areas include Road Accident Fund Insurance, Long term/Life, Medical Negligence and Workplace.
