Once, the most trusted man in America was a television newscaster, Walter Cronkite, who anchored the CBS Evening News throughout the 1960s and '70s. Today, barely more than one in 10 Americans trusts the news on television and not many more trust mainstream newspapers. What brought us to this point is a complex stew, including the rise of social media often filled with misinformation, the collapse of local news sources and political polarization that has undermined trust in all institutions. There are solutions, but they won't be easy.
