Sharp tools are a necessity to good work - from woodshop to kitchen. Sharp tools are safer and easier to use.

Spend an evening with an experienced woodworker learning how to get a shaving sharp edge on any tool. The easier and FASTER it is for you to sharpen, the more often you will actually do it! The key to this method of sharpening is to never spend more than a few minutes on a dull edge, and to never spend more than a few seconds to refresh an edge to razor sharp. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on an expensive sharpening system or set of stones, this class will teach you an accessible and low cost way to get a more reliable edge, using long-lasting 3M micro-abrasives. At the end of the class, each student will get a set of these abrasives to take home. Please feel free to bring whatever you want to learn how to sharpen: scissors, kitchen knives, chisels, hand-planes, etc. The theory is the same no matter what is being sharpened, but the class will focus on the specific tools that you are interested in.

This class will include:

  • Theory behind sharpening and micro-bevels
  • Comparison of different sharpening stones (diamond, waterstone, oilstone) and discussion of pros/cons of 3M micro-abrasive
  • Proper techniques for free-hand sharpening
  • Tips and tricks for the specific tools you have interest in sharpening
  • Looking at the difference between kind-of sharp and REALLY sharp with various tests

What to Bring: Dull tools, chisels, plane irons, kitchen knives, pocket knives, scissors, etc...

Instructor

  • Sam Shuster

    Sam Shuster

By day, Sam Shuster is an engineer working at a large company. By night (and weekend) he is a woodworker with experience in woodturning and furniture making. He especially likes taking twice as long as needed to make something with hand tools! Or even better: using hand tools to make a new, specialized tool and then never getting around to the actual project...

He’s been a Generator member since 2014 and is always excited to meet new members.
