Using Literature To Promote Empathy & Social-Emotional Learning in the Classroom

How do children acquire the necessary social-emotional learning (SEL) skills, attitudes, and courage to prevent peer cruelty and promote kindness and compassion? How do we encourage reflective thinking, empathy, and compassion? Children's literature, in tandem with adult-guided activities, is a wonderful supplemental tool to promote empathy and SEL in the classroom and beyond. This session will show you how to use literature to motivate students to step up and take action when it comes to fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and acceptance with your schools.

In this session, we will:

  • Understand how reading literary fiction actually helps make young readers' brains more empathetic and can boost their SEL skills.
  • Explore how to use stories to help address SEL issues kids face on a daily basis.
  • Receive tips, tools, and resources to promote empathy, growth mindset, equity, and inclusion.
