In 1991, the fourth (now seventh) Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the tabling of the Sixth Malaysia Plan introduced Wawasan 2020 or Vision 2020. The vision calls for the nation to achieve a self-sufficient industrialised nation by the year 2020, encompasses all aspects of life, from economic prosperity, social well-being, educational world-class, political stability, as well as psychological balance.

Truly, the vision has guided the country over the years, and there have been significant changes to the landscape of Malaysia. In supporting Malaysia's growth, EU Companies contributed to the realisation of Vision 2020 through massive amounts of foreign direct investments, technology and knowledge exchange. This number continues to grow each year and, in a business context, Malaysia today is also seen as the global getaway into ASEAN due to the many successful pillars of the nation's development strategy implemented throughout the path to Vision 2020.
