The Philippines is an agricultural country with the potential for biogas production due to the substantial amounts of biowaste generated from agricultural activities and food processing. Organic waste disposal and waste management continues to be a problem, especially in cities. Biogas is one of the promising alternative energy sources due to its capacity to reduce organic waste streams and to produce environmentally-friendly energy.
Since the introduction of biogas technology in the country in 1965, biogas been produced in small-scale applications such as household and backyard production. In 2021 GPCCI-member company MetPower Venture Partners, built two industrial-scale biogas plants in Mindanao to process Dole Philippines' pineapple waste and convert it into biogas.
The forum Waste to Watts: Biogas as a Renewable Energy Source in the Philippines aims to raise awareness of the potential of industrial-scale biogas technology in the Philippines, discuss the present developments in the fields, and foster potential business partnerships between German technology providers and local stakeholders.
This forum is part of the Pineapples to Power project, a three-year initiative by German biogas tank producer Lipp GmbH and co-funded by the German government. The objective is to train local biogas technicians on the maintenance and safe handling of biogas plants. It is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through a develoPPP project.
