We are pleased to invite you to a free webinar organized by the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb) in conjunction with United Nations Human Rights Special Procedures and International Law Association titled "Access to Remedy: The Role of ADR in Business and Human Rights Agenda". This webinar is designed to provide a platform for discussion and knowledge sharing on the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in promoting business and human rights.

The webinar aims to explore the role of ADR in providing access to remedy for business-related human rights violations. It will bring together experts from the fields of arbitration, law, and human rights to discuss the challenges and opportunities in using ADR mechanisms to resolve disputes and promote sustainable development.


Objectives:

1. Raise awareness about the potential of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in facilitating easier access to justice, particularly in the context of business and human rights.

2. Educate individuals and corporations, ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to high-profile corporations, about the existence of ADR mechanisms and how to access these services effectively.

3. Explore the specific ways in which arbitration and mediation, as ADR mechanisms, can be leveraged to address human rights impacts and related issues within the business context.

4. Provide practical insights and examples to demonstrate how ADR can be effectively utilized to resolve disputes and mitigate human rights violations in business operations.

    Professor Fabian Ikenna Ajogwu is the Current President and also the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICArb).

    Professor Fabian is also a Senior Partner at Kenna Partners Law Firm. He is Nigeria's first Professor of Corporate Governance and holds a full professorship with the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, where he has taught continuously since 2000.

    Professor Damilola S. Olawuyi is a Professor of Law and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research Innovation & Strategic Partnerships (ARISP) at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD). He holds a doctorate (DPhil) in energy and environmental law from the University of Oxford; a master of laws (LL.M.) from Harvard University; and another LL.M. from the University of Calgary.

    He obtained a first-class degree in law from Igbinedion University, Nigeria and another first-class degree from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja, Nigeria.

    A prolific and highly regarded scholar, Professor Olawuyi has published over 100 influential articles, books, and reports on energy finance, sustainable development law and extractive resource governance. He has lectured on energy and environmental law in over 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. He has served as a visiting professor at Columbia Law School, New York, China University of Political Science and Law and senior visiting research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. In 2019, he was a Herbert Smith Freehills visiting professor at Cambridge University. He was formerly an international energy lawyer at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP where he served on the firm's global committee on energy investments in Africa.

    Professor Olawuyi serves on the executive committees and boards of several organizations.

    Shola Oshodi-John is the Chief Executive Officer/Registrar, and member of Faculty of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, (NICArb) first Arbitration (and ADR) institute in Sub-Saharan Africa. She has extensive experience in training, policy and change management and has served as solicitor and legal adviser to corporate and not for profit organizations. Shola is an advocate for home-grown administration and development of arbitration and Alternative Dispute (ADR) practice in Nigeria (and Africa), Editor of the first and only Journal of Arbitration published by NICArb, a regular speaker at international and national conferences on Arbitration, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. She holds a degree in Law, LLB (Hons) from the Lagos State University, Lagos, BL degree from the Nigerian Law School and a Master's Degree in Public Policy and Management, with a certificate in Non-Profit Management from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, USA, Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrator, member, Institute of Transnational Arbitration, and Associate of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators.
