What is the PDPA and GDPR, and what do they entail?


In 2012, the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) was passed by the Singapore Parliament. The PDPA sets the baseline standard of protection for personal data in Singapore, further complementing the aforementioned sector-specific legislative and regulatory frameworks in order to safeguard personal data from misuse. Companies have been known to be fined for data breach under PDPA and hence it is important for companies to know their obligations.


The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is Europe's data privacy and security law that is known for being the toughest privacy and security law in the world. As of 2018, all organisations around the world are subject to the regulations of the GDPR as long as they collect the data related to people in the European Union (EU). Companies who violate the GDPR regulations are subject to harsh fines and penalties. Hence companies need to safeguard themselves to find out about GDPR.
