This Work Zone Safety Seminar will feature two topics selected by IRTBA's Construction Work Zone Safety Committee: Fall Protection and Temporary Traffic Control.

Fall Protection training is a crucial aspect of ensuring workplace safety, especially in construction; on average, one construction worker falls to their death every day in America. This training will educate the participants on the proper use of safety equipment, such as harnesses and lanyards, as well as teaching them how to identify and mitigate fall hazards.

The training covers:

• Nature of fall hazards
• Correct use of guardrails
• Personal Fall Arrest System:
• Wearing a full-body harness
• Proper lanyard/self-retracting lifeline use
• Anchor point requirements
• Proper use of a rope-grab system
• Importance of personal fall arrest systems
• Limitations of fall protection equipment

A tripod and winch will be available to demonstrate proper use of the PFAS as well as self-rescue procedures.

Temporary Traffic Control is a crucial aspect of ensuring safety in construction zones and other areas where traffic flow is disrupted.

Here is an outline of what would be covered:

• Work Zone Setup: The first step in temporary traffic control is setting up the work zone. This involves defining the area where work is taking place using cones, barrels, barricades, or other appropriate devices. The work zone should be well-marked and easily identifiable to drivers.
• Traffic Control Devices: Various traffic control devices are used to guide drivers safely through the work zone. These include signs, signals, and pavement markings. These devices provide important information to drivers, such as speed limits, lane closures, and detour routes.
• Flaggers: In some cases, flaggers may be used to direct traffic through the work zone. Flaggers are trained individuals who use hand signals and flags to communicate with drivers and ensure safe passage through the construction area.
• Lane Closures: Temporary lane closures are often necessary in work zones. These closures should be clearly marked with signs and barricades, and drivers should be directed into the appropriate lanes to ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic.
• Speed Reduction: Speed limits in work zones are typically reduced to protect both workers and drivers. Speed limit signs should be posted and enforced to ensure that drivers slow down as they approach the work zone.
• Worker Safety: Ensuring the safety of workers in the construction zone is paramount. This includes providing workers with high-visibility clothing and safety equipment and ensuring that they are aware of the traffic control plan.
