HISTORY OF IPM

Established in 1945, the Institute of People Management (IPM) is a membership-based organization dedicated to equipping HR professionals, business leaders, and managers with the skills, tools, and mindsets necessary to achieve desired outcomes in both work and life.


OUR VISION

Our vision is to serve as a beacon of Thought Leadership in people management. We strive to integrate the best practices and practical applications gleaned from our members' experiences, evidence-based research, and field studies into all our learning and development initiatives. These endeavors are guided by seasoned practitioners, consultants, and academics, whose research serves as the cornerstone of our vision and propels our mission forward.


OUR MISSION

IPM's mission is to elevate the human resources and people management profession as a significant contributor to the sustainable performance of its members, organizations, and stakeholders in the economy. In doing so, IPM aims to become the premier and most trusted professional body for human resources and people management in South Africa and beyond.


OUR MANDATE

IPM's mandate encompasses several key objectives:


*Represent and govern a distinguished community of expert practitioners, specifically Human Resources and people management professionals.

*Promote public protection from malpractices in fulfilling professional duties and responsibilities, as expected of all Professional Bodies.

*Cultivate a sense of pride in association with all professions, including traditional trades and occupations.

*Develop professional designations for members, with the capability to monitor and revoke them when necessary.

*Establish and implement a Code of Conduct.

*Demonstrate a commitment to fair practices in awarding professional designations.

*Enhance public understanding of and trust in the profession.

*Encourage global best practices and elevate professional esteem.

*Facilitate access to and analysis of profession-related data for compliance with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Act.

*Support the development of a national career advice system.

*Promote continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives.

*Play a pivotal role in identifying suitable workplaces for work-integrated learning and assessing workplace experiences.*

*Take a leading role in identifying suitable education and training providers, including tertiary institutions.

*Advance the profession and the competencies of its members by administering Board examinations.

*Further the objectives of the NQF.

    As a member of IPM, you are entitled to apply for a Professional Designation that recognises your level of professional competence. You can use this designation level as a signature after your name. 

    IPM Annual Convention: Members discounts

    Members receive a discount when registering for our Annual Convention, which has been hosted since 1956 and has been rated as a world-class event.

    Delegates have the opportunity to learn from the experts, share knowledge and network with like-minded peers in the industry.

    The Convention provides concrete takeaways for application back in the workplace, such as frameworks, models, processes and case studies from leading organisations. 

    Delegates have access to the exhibition which showcases products and services targeted at the HR market.

    Members benefit from a discounted rate for stand space at the exhibition. 

    The convention offers branding and marketing opportunities through sponsorships and exhibitions. 

    People dynamics

     Members receive a copy of People Dynamics the official magazine of the Institute. The magazine is an award-winning publication which is been in print since 1980. People Dynamics provides a forum for debate and discussion on all issues affecting people managers in South Africa, the African continent and beyond. 

     Online Knowledge Exchange Groups

     *Members have access to eight specialist groups, hosted on our CRM system, which create a space for members to develop and grow through discussing and debating topical issues, with expert input.

    *Keep you up to date with current issues in your specialist area of HR. 

    * Allow you to debate topical issues with experts. Each group will launch with a guest host who is a leading thinker.                           

    *Provide access to knowledge and best practice shared by other HR professionals engaging with the community, from a range of sectors, organisations and regions.

    * Provide an opportunity to share your own knowledge and best practice experience in  IPM Community of Experts Practitioners:

    • Learning and development;
    • Organisation development;
    • Talent management and mobility;
    • Employee wellness;
    • Labour relations transformation;
    • Reward and compensation and one focussed solely on topical issues in HR called 'Burning Issues'.

    * Leaders working at Director and Executive level in their organisations have access to a dedicated Directors Group

    STUDENTS PROFESSIONAL CHAPTER 

    The IPM Student Professional Chapter has been established to nurture the development of young professionals in the field of Human Resource and People's Management fields. 

    VISION

    To be the greatest and persuasive young HR professionals in the Southern African Region and beyond.

    MISSION

    The chapter shall convene forums and summits, initiate programmes and strategic approaches that are aimed at deliberating on Human Resources and People Management issues that impact our socio-economic being and education, both as the country and the continent.


    The Student Professional Chapter Membership is open to all People Management Practitioners who have joined the profession in various organizations, both in the public and the private sector, and students who are enrolling towards the qualifications related to Human Resources Management and other People's Management qualification.
