SURGE began in the summer of 2011 when the founders Phil Zeltzman, Justin Harper, and Jim Ballow met in Boerne, TX, to share war stories and discuss ways to improve their mobile surgical practices without reinventing the wheel.
They each felt that they were on an island, as a few colleagues were discussing the issues they faced daily: electric or nitrogen? Tech or no tech? LLC or S-corp? They quickly realized that, despite the differences in their specific practices, they faced many of the same problems: no second opinions, no negotiation power, and no mobile surgery practice business standards. So they decided to share ideas, advice, and best practices.
As friends and colleagues joined the fun, SURGE was born… and grew to about 90 independent surgeons in the US, Canada, and beyond. SURGE is not a corporation, it’s a community. Our members are not employees of SURGE, they own their practice and remain in complete control of their decisions.
