We look forward to meeting all our council members, national and provincial leaders at the 2022 National Leadership and Member Induction on the 2nd of April. 2022 Budget Speech
ABASA hosted its Annual Post Budget Speech event on the 24th of February 2022 in partnership with SNG GT. Keynote address was delivered by the Honorable Deputy Minister Dr David Masondo followed by robust engagement from an esteemed panel of speakers.

ABASA also had the opportunity to attend Budget Speech events in Cape Town which included the Annual Budget Speech Competition Dinner hosted by Old Mutual and the Post Budget Speech Breakfast hosted by Brightstone. This provided an important platform to share ABASA's position on the state of our fiscal with the Honorable Minister of Finance Mr Enoch Godongwana and our role as ABASA in responding to the issues of mismanagement of public funds and poor governance which frustrate service delivery.

Finding the Fair Way Foundation Golf Day
On the 10th of March I had the privilege of supporting the founding President of ABASA, Jeff van Rooyen as he launched a project close to his heart, raising awareness around the plight of golf caddies. It is always inspiring to see our stalwarts continue to stand up for what is right and lead by example even beyond their years of official service to ABASA. Well done President Jeff!

INCE Talks
It was a pleasure to attend the kick-off of the INCE Talks hosted by The Chairman of INCE and Past President of ABASA, Andile Khumalo. This first session had the Auditor General of South Africa and Past President of ABASA, Tsakani Maluleke as the keynote speaker unpacking reporting challenges and opportunities, lessons and the importance of good governance and transparency in public sector institutions. ABASA looks forward to working closer with INCE to raise much needed awareness around matters concerning the public sector.

International Women's Day : #BreakTheBias
On the 8th of March every year, ABASA stands with its Women in commemoration of International Women's Day. This year we partnered with FASSET as we crossed our arms to #BreakTheBias against stereotypes that hold women back. Thank you to all our past presidents, board members and leaders who participated in this campaign. May we all continue to deliberately call out biases against women.

On the 9th of March I had the privilege of facilitating a panel hosted by ACCA under the theme Breaking the Bias in Accountancy & Finance.

It is always such a pleasure working with our stakeholders and I look forward to more of these partnerships.

Tribute to Prof Mohammed Sader Tayob
On the 14th of March 2022 the accounting profession woke up to the news of Prof Tayob's untimely passing. Prof Tayob's role in the University of Limpopo achieving its South Africa Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) accreditation for its undergraduate, BCTA and PGDA programmes in 2011, 2015 and 2016 respectively is something that ABASA does not take lightly. Those that understand our profession and the CA(SA) designation will appreciate that such an accreditation is considered gold, particularly when it is awarded to historically disadvantaged universities such as this one, which produces a significant number of black professionals in our country. With this accreditation it means that a black child has the opportunity to become a sought after chartered accountant through the University of Limpopo. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

ITC Results
On Friday the 25th of March, SAICA released the 2022 Initial Test of Competence (ITC) results. We would like to congratulate all the candidates who were successful in this exam and wish them all the best as they prepare for their Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) exams.

To the candidates who were not successful we hope that you will remember that these results do not define you and we encourage you to take your next attempt as an opportunity to master your craft. Wishing you all the very best in your preparations.

ABASA also notes with concern the 20 percent pass rate of the University of South Africa (UNISA). While the absolute number produced by UNISA is high in relation to the other universities (189) there is still notable concern around the 750 UNISA candidates who were not successful. Deeper analysis and engagements will be done by ABASA. Details will be shared soon on the upcoming Town Hall on this matter.

ABASA Forum Magazine - Coming Soon
In my first message of the year in January, I promised to share a project that will be revived in the month of March.
I am excited to announce that ABASA will be relaunching The ABASA Forum Magazine. The Forum is the official ABASA thought-leadership magazine which was started in 2003 by the First Woman President of ABASA, Dr Futhi Mtoba with the assistance of Tham-Tham De Verteuil who was the Managing Director of ABASA at the time.

My hope is that this refreshed bi-annual publication will provide greater understanding of the history of, not only ABASA, but our profession and its transformation journey. It will also be an opportunity to drive collaboration with our stakeholders and to showcase the immense talent and excellence of our members in their various chosen disciplines

For more details on publication dates and how to contribute to this magazine email communications@abasa.org.za

Thank you to all of you who write back and share your views. I always look forward to engaging with you.

Best
Linda Maqoma
