Dear Subscriber,
In July ABASA commenced with celebrations of the success of the recently qualified accountants across our various accounting bodies. This drive across the country is befitting of the word “Excellence” which forms part of the ABASA National theme “Driving Leadership Excellence Through Inclusive Social Accountability.”

Words that to come mind when I think about excellence from an ABASA perspective are:
Ethical Values
Discipline
Integrity
Respect
Humility

It is these words which will be driving the ABASA Disciplinary Policy, which is currently being developed and will soon be shared with our members as we strive to respond to the ethical challenges that face our profession.

ABASA Professional Excellence Dinners
The Gauteng, Western Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal ABASA Professional Excellence Dinners were a great success. I would like to thank our provincial branches for the tremendous work that they’ve put in towards these dinners. A special mention to our headline sponsor Investec, who are sponsoring all our dinners across the country. Thank you to Makosi for sponsoring the awards for the above mentioned dinners. We look forward to seeing our members at the upcoming Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Free State dinners; click here for more information and registration.

2022 Youth Entrepreneurship Expo
I had the privilege of attending the 2022 Youth Entrepreneurship Expo at the University of Witwatersrand as a speaker and facilitator. I look forward to collaborating with organisations such as Young African Entrepreneurship as we explore entrepreneurship opportunities from an accounting perspective.

Mandela Day 2022: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”
We celebrated the birthday of an icon, Former President Nelson Mandela, on the 18th of July, also known as Mandela Day. I can only hope that the ideals of contributing towards our communities go beyond special days such as these as we continue to pay it forward in the ABASA spirit of ubuntu. We can all do what we can, with what we have, in our different spaces.

ABASA Annual Convention 2022
The plans for the ABASA Annual Convention are well underway. Look out for communication which will be shared with our members and stakeholders within the month of August.

National Appointments
Join me in congratulating the Lebo Phasha who has been appointed ABASA National Head of Economy. I wish him well in his new role.

This month has really inspired us in the work that we do, having received so much feedback on the impact of our initiatives. I look forward to hearing from you all.

Best

Linda Maqoma
