A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Despite the new year being a traditionally quiet time, AustCham has continued to be busy. We have had a number of meetings with some of our new members, and learned more about their operations and how AustCham can support them. Recently AustCham was also honoured to be invited to the LNCCI Lao Business Leaders Award, where AustCham was recognised for its’ continued contribution to the Lao business environment.

This month has also been a period of planning, as we get ready for the year ahead. This year will see the return of the AustCham Charity Golf Day, with all proceeds going to Vientiane Rescue. We will continue to organise Sundowners for every month, with some of our newer members expressing interest in hosting these events. There will also be Breakfast Briefings, economic outlooks, and other business focussed events. Of course, we will also host the AustCham Ball, the highlight of Vientiane’s social calendar, later this year. We are planning our schedule of trainings for both online and offline courses, so if there is a specific area of training that you are interested in, please let us know.
Please keep an eye out for more details to be released closer to the dates.

However not this month has also been tinged with sadness. The sudden passing of Jo Lidbetter was extremely heart-breaking and we join the Lao and expat community in mourning her passing. Amongst her many contributions to Laos, Jo was also an incredible trainer for AustCham. She will be sorely missed by her students and our team.

Sharp, Long-lasting Slowdown to Hit Developing Countries Hard
Sharp, Long-lasting Slowdown to Hit Developing Countries Hard
Global growth is slowing sharply in the face of elevated inflation, higher interest rates, reduced investment, and disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report.
Given fragile economic conditions, any new adverse development—such as higher-than-expected inflation, abrupt rises in interest rates to contain it, a resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic, or escalating geopolitical tensions—could push the global economy into recession. This would mark the first time in more than 80 years that two global recessions have occurred within the same decade.

The global economy is projected to grow by 1.7% in 2023 and 2.7% in 2024. The sharp downturn in growth is expected to be widespread, with forecasts in 2023 revised down for 95% of advanced economies and nearly 70% of emerging market and developing economies.

Behavioral Insights to Reduce Open Waste Burning in Lao PDR : Behavioral Insights and Policy Options
Behavioral Insights to Reduce Open Waste Burning in Lao PDR : Behavioral Insights and Policy Options
In order to promote environmentally friendly behaviors, it is fundamental not only to consider and modify already existing infrastructure and facilities, or rethink physical prompts and cues in the environment, but also contemplate and target the cognitive traits inherent to any human being.

Sustainable behaviors such as recycling, reusing, and composting are driven by different motivations and beliefs. In the past few decades, scholars have also devoted significant attention to identify and describe major socio-psychological and situational determinants of sustainable behaviors, such as age, gender, cultural background, attitudes, knowledge, motivation, social influence and others. In this report, the authors provide a description of how behavioral science was used to generate insights on factors that influence open burning in the population of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR).

This report will walk the reader through the different phases of the behavioral method applied to open burning in Lao PDR. In the definition phase the behavior is outlined, and the social, psychological, and contextual factors that influence it are studied. In the second phase, an intervention based on the hypotheses is designed. Finally, the intervention is implemented and evaluated in order to adapt the solutions to the current reality of the population.
