Striking a Balance Between Growth, Aging Infrastructure, and Transportation Funding |

As Idaho experiences rapid population growth coupled with aging infrastructure, ensuring the upkeep and modernization of its transportation infrastructure is vital. A 2020 study by the Idaho Policy Institute revealed challenges posed by revenue instability, including declining fuel tax revenues and flat rates, hindering maintenance and expansion efforts. The study emphasizes that proactive measures are crucial to prevent escalating costs due to deferred maintenance. Insufficient funding leads to a compounding funding requirement over time, highlighting the urgency of addressing transportation needs now.
While the Governor and Legislature’s recent investments in transportation has made strides, the demands persist and will only grow with the state’s increasing population, commodities, and aging infrastructure. It’s imperative to continue supporting transportation funding to ensure sustained progress and meet the evolving needs of Idaho’s transportation system.

Navigating Progress: ITD’s Fiscal Year 2023 Annual Report |

The FY23 Annual Report from the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) spotlights significant progress and enhancements in Idaho’s transportation infrastructure, propelled by Governor Little’s Leading Idaho initiative. This report showcases a heightened focus on customer engagement, stakeholder collaboration, and innovation driven by dedicated employees. Additionally, the report sheds light on the state’s evolving landscape and the aging infrastructure, marking nearly 50 years since the construction boom in the 1960s.
To help mitigate these challenges, ITD has embraced an “invest with purpose” philosophy, to strategically allocate funds and ensure maximum long-term benefits for both the community and the economy, aiming to leave a lasting impact for future generations.
