Governor Little has signed H414 into law, effective July 1, 2024, impacting Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) with the following key changes:
  • CDL renewal period extended from 4 to 8 years.
  • Online renewal fees reduced by $5.
  • Establishes a Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse check for CDL licenses through Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).

H608, recently approved by the House of Representatives, aims to institute Agricultural Protection Areas, offering benefits to farmers and ranchers who choose to apply for this designation, subject to county approval. Notably, the current wording of the bill entails the removal of condemnation authority for counties and highway districts within these designated zones.

Anticipate a crucial hearing on the bill in the Senate Local Government and Taxation Committee. Keep an eye out for a detailed update in the forthcoming issue of The Roadmap next week.

National Transportation News
  • The Indiana DOT has revealed that 51 rural cities, towns, and counties are slated to receive a substantial $155.6 million in federal funds for vital investments to enhance local roads, bridges, and sidewalks (). 
  • Tennessee DOT utilized 8.2 million pounds of hot and cold mix to repair potholes following January’s winter storms, surpassing the 2023 usage by over twofold (). 
  • Missouri’s Rural Routes Program, which enhanced 1,700 lane miles in 2023, has been granted an additional $100 million to further support low-volume rural roads throughout the state (). 
  • Kansas DOT is exploring the transition from the state-wide gas tax program to a “road usage charge” (RUC), where motorists would be billed per mile driven. To thoroughly assess this alternative, they are spearheading a Midwest RUC study in collaboration with the Minnesota DOT ().
