Akwaaba (Welcome) to the ABSW Metro DC Chapter! The Metropolitan D.C. Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) hosted the organization's Second National Conference at Howard University from February 21-23, 1970. The Howard University School of Social Work and the Washington Urban League sponsored the Conference. At the time, the Chapter was led by John L. Clark (Chairman), Robert A. Keyes (Co-Chair), Viola Jefferson (Treasurer), and James Workman (National Steering Committee Member). Following the Conference, the Chapter was briefly phased out. However, under the dynamic leadership of Jay Chunn and James E. Craigen, the Chapter was reestablished in 1972-73. For over 50 years, the Chapter has remained deeply committed to the ongoing liberation struggle, serving as a beacon of empowerment for the Black community.
