Dear valued members,

A very Happy New Year 2022!

After a year of resumption and readjustment for businesses and now will be a time for us to pause and reflect on the successes and challenges we have experienced - and to look forward to the road ahead with renewed hope and determination. I wish everyone the very best in venturing forth into 2022.

Firstly, I would like to start off by expressing my appreciation to His Excellency Charles Hay, fellow board members, distinguished members, the executive office team as well as many other stakeholders– who has shown me great support and cooperation throughout my term as Chairman of this prestigious Chamber. My tenure as Chairman which began in August 2020 was overshadowed by the global pandemic but nonetheless - the Chamber continued to showcase true professionalism in playing a key role to serve our members’ needs. The Chamber appreciates and honours the trust placed by our members and we pledge to continue to serve with commitment and vigour in the coming years.

I am proud to acknowledge that the BMCC has come a long way in pivoting towards the digital sphere - demonstrating true qualities of agile, resiliency and adaptability whilst maintaining its relevancy by responding to members and presenting a better member proposition all round. The Chamber’s continuous efforts in organising virtual programmes & webinars, high-level engagement with government stakeholders, creating platforms for members to brand and profile as well as our work in trade services are well welcomed by our members – further cementing the Chamber’s role to act as an advocate and prominent voice of investor and business community in Malaysia.

Moreover, the Chamber managed to retain a significant majority of existing members from 2021 – further exemplifying the Chamber’s crucial role in the eyes of our members. The BMCC has proven its ability to be a pertinent resource and support for our members as well as to communicate and advocate on behalf of businesses – either small or large. I especially welcome feedbacks and suggestions from our members as the Chamber continues to seek for improvement in terms of creating the right value propositions.

With significant contribution and achievements, I believe that this year is a seminal year for the Chamber - as it looks to rejuvenate and refocus to meet the demands of our vibrant business community. Plans are in place to reviving the face-to-face networking events, strengthening of industry advocacy and government engagement, to continue providing platforms for branding and profiling as well as strengthening our trade services offerings. I truly believe the Chamber can play a momentous role assisting members in overcoming setbacks of the pandemic and fuelling the recovery process through high-level engagements and advocacy.

I am happy to share that the Chamber will look to push on after the success of Malaysia Climate Action Week in pledging to continue to raise awareness regarding the issue and implement climate-related initiatives throughout. Being at the forefront of this important agenda, the Chamber will seek to assist members in relevant climate-related goals and initiatives to accomplish.

On top of that, we can even look forward to the highly anticipated Business Excellence Awards this year, a grandeur event where the Chamber acknowledges the accomplishments and excellence of both British and Malaysian businesses. Moving forward as well, the Chamber will look to add more value by propagating networks and initiatives that align with members’ cause of interests – specifically in digitalisation, climate action, healthcare, diversity as well as the important role of SMEs.

With this, I am confident that the BMCC will continue to be resilient, adaptable and strengthen value in the interest of our members and UK- Malaysia businesses relations. Sunway University Accredited by Advance HE to Directly Award Fellowships to Staff

Sunway University in Malaysia has had a staff development programme accredited by Advance HE. Their Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice (PCHE) has been developed to align with the Professional Standards Framework, as well as Malaysian Qualifications Agency requirements.

The programme’s accredited status means that participants of the programme can demonstrate they have met Descriptor 2 of the framework. Meeting Descriptor 2 of the PSF means academic staff can be recognised as Advance HE Fellows, an internationally recognised mark of high quality teaching and learning.

Royal Selangor | Benevolence

Ancient Chinese astronomy divides the constellations into four groups which correspond to the four cardinal directions. Each direction is assigned a mythological creature as guardian; the Azure Dragon of the east, Vermilion Phoenix of the south, White Tiger of the west and Black Tortoise of the north.

Each guardian represents a colour, a season of the year, time of day, and a natural element. Royal Selangor brings to life the celestial guardians from ancient Chinese mythology.

Tay & Partners | Contributes to Flood Relief Efforts in the Klang Valley

In light of the devastation and loss that has affected so many families in the recent floods in Klang Valley and surrounding areas, Tay & Partners reached out in kind with emergency relief for flood victims. The firm partnered with The Lost Food Project to deliver over 100kg of food and basic necessities to flood-affected communities in Klang, Selangor.

The KL-based legal firm also raised funds and contributed to the post-flood relief and restoration of homes of staff that have been ravaged by the floods in Hulu Langat, Selangor.

WWF-Malaysia | Nature's Role in the Economy: An Introduction to Natural Capital

Capital Markets Malaysia, WWF-Malaysia, and the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur are excited to bring you “Nature’s Role in the Economy: An Introduction to Natural Capital” - the first in a series of four events introducing natural capital to Malaysian businesses.

In this session, Isabel Hoffmann from the Capitals Coalition will introduce the concept of natural capital and what it means for business.
