Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee &
96th Birthday Celebrations in Malaysia

image
Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebration was held over four days from June 2 – June 5 2022 in the United Kingdom and celebrated elsewhere in the Commonwealth.

Queen Elizabeth II, who is 96 years old, is the first British monarch to reign for 70 years. Her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years before dying at the age of 81 in 1901, was the previous longest-serving monarch. To commemorate the platinum jubilee celebration, more than 600 "Big Jubilee Lunches" was expected to be held in more than 80 countries across the Commonwealth and the rest of the world. Queen Elizabeth II is without a doubt one of the most well-known and respected people in the world.

The British High Commission Kuala Lumpur hosted a grand reception last Thursday to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee and 96th birthday. Malaysia’s Queen, Her Majesty Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah. graced the reception with her daughter, Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah 'Athiyatullah. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Raja Permaisuri Agong met the Queen at Buckingham Palace during a special visit to the UK in 2019, which reflected the close relationship between Her Majesty's government and the Malaysian government.

The reception was attended by over 800 guests including Malaysia’s Finance Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, senior representatives from ministries, members of the Malaysian royalty, youth and non-government organisations, diplomatic corps and business community.

In his speech, H.E. Charles Hay MVO, British High Commissioner to Malaysia paid a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and her dedication to serving the people of the UK and the Commonwealth.

"The UK and Malaysia have a deep shared history which today has flourished into a modern day partnership with both countries working collaboratively across areas of mutual interest," he said.

"The most important facet of Her Majesty's reign is her sense of duty and tireless devotion to a life of service."

"Through the seven decades of her reign, the Queen has been an important source of stability and strength for the UK. She has transcended politics, change of government, wars and pandemic," he said in his speech at the Sime Darby International Gallery on Thursday, June 16, 2022."

Guests who attended the reception were treated to a showcase of British culture and pageantry, the best of British food, performances by the Great British Circus, as well as a selection of hit songs in the UK spanning 70 years of The Queen’s reign. Portraits of the Queen by Malaysian pencil artist Hakim Abdullah were also on display, as was digital artwork by British artist Rachel Gray.

Share Your Green Initiatives (Take 5: A Year In Review)
Launched in February 2021, this exclusive interview – Take 5 – offers an insider’s look into our respective members’ Green agenda and how their organisations are implementing various initiatives, activities and commitments that are both environment-friendly and sustainable. Featuring prominent members’ CEOs, the interview aims to highlight industry champions and key opinion leaders to further push the Green narrative as a sustainable aspect of any business operation.

A year down the road, we have had the privilege to interview and feature 10 members’ CEOs from prestigious organisations such as Standard Chartered, HSBC, PwC, and Smith + Nephew to name a few - these are well-known organisations that are leading the Green curve in terms of initiatives and implementation.

For example, Shell Malaysia has installed solar panels on rooftops of over 150 retail stations and is using wind and solar energy to power their offshore projects. The University of Nottingham emphasises student initiatives to reduce single-use plastics and encourage sustainable eating and reduce food waste. HSBC is at the forefront of sustainable finance with Green bonds and sustainability sukuks.

As we look to another year, we would like to call upon any interested members to participate in this interview and join us in our journey to ensuring a Green trail wherever we go. Interested members can enquire at comms@bmcc.org.my.
