A.C.T. Now for the Future of Our Next Generation

Major news outlets recently carried a report, which quoted world-renowned ethologist and activist, Dr Jane Goodall as saying "climate change was at a point of no return". This should serve as a wake up call for everyone around the world to play a part in ensuring that we can continue to call earth our home in a sustainable manner.

In the news article, Dr Goodall warned that the climate of the earth was changing so quickly that we were running low on any chances to fixing it, while adding that time was rapidly shortening to halt the worst effects of global warming caused by human.

"We are literally approaching a point of no return. Look around the world at what's happening with climate change. It's terrifying. We are part of the natural world and we depend on healthy ecosystems," the news article quoted Dr Goodall.

The BMCC champions issues related to climate change and in the run-up to last year's 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) held in Glasgow, the Chamber together with British High Commission Kuala Lumpur organised the Malaysia Climate Action Week in October 2021. The five-day programme of incisive discussions on climate action covered various topics including environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles, climate governance, sustainable energy, climate-smart cities, net zero supply chains and food supply.

With the success of last year's programme, the BMCC is continuing the momentum of the Malaysia Climate Action Week with even more events and activities this year from 17 to 21 October with the theme A.C.T. Now! Adapt, Collaborate and Transcend.

A highlight of this year's Malaysia Climate Action Week is the A.C.T. Now Conference on 18 October 2022. Two C-suite level panel of speakers will participate in the conference with topics on creation of ESG-engaged organisations as well as contribution by the built environment sector towards achieving climate goals.

A group of renowned sustainability practitioners and stakeholders will be speaking at the half-day conference. Some of the confirmed panel speakers include Mark Arthun, Managing Director & Site Leader of Smith & Nephew Operations Sdn Bhd and also the Chair of BMCC, Brian Fischel, General Manager of Reckitt Malaysia, Singapore & Vietnam, Datuk Seri Michael Yam, President of Chartered Institute of Building, Dato' Sri Azmi Abdul Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of YTL Construction and Ir Kenny Wong, Managing Director of Veritas Environment Sdn Bhd. They are set to present transformational sustainable initiatives and actionable solutions in line with the theme of this year's Malaysia Climate Action Week.

An eco-exhibition showcasing sustainable products and services will be held along with the conference. Besides that, we will also be recognising the success stories of organisations that announced their commitment to the BMCC Climate Action Pledge last year.

Johor Sees Positive Growth in Digital Investment
Johor continues to attract substantial digital investment opportunities, with around RM51 billion in industry investment recorded in the first half of this year. State Investment, Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee Chairman Lee Ting Han said this would strengthen Johor’s position as an ideal investment destination for both local and international companies. He added that with the current positive growth, they believe the state will continue to attract more investors from the data centre industry as well as other supporting sectors.

Lee noted that four data centres are set to begin operation in 2024 at the Sedenak Tech Park in Kulai. The robust digital investment drive into the country, particularly Johor, would attract other supporting industries, further boost investment and create high quality job opportunities. It will allow locals to get better employment in Johor instead of having to cross over to Singapore.
