Malaysia Prioritises Climate Change Adaptation, Climate Finance and Showcasing of Local Solution during COP27 Conference. |

Malaysia sent its largest delegation ever to the annual United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27) which was held from 6-18 November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt and established a Malaysia Pavilion to demonstrate local solutions to tackle climate change.
The Malaysian Delegation led by Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, Secretary General of Ministry of Environment and Water said, they will continue their mandate and focus on several key issues such as finalising the rules for a compliance-based carbon market, ironing out the process for the Global Stock Take (GST) in 2023 and demanded more aid from developed nations in climate change adaptation and climate finance. He also added that the adaptation finance was crucial for developing countries. The allocation of funding from developed countries is skewed towards mitigation. It is possible to take preventative measures now since the technology exists, however, the adaptation still needs to be addressed as countries are still fighting an uphill battle against floods and other climate-related problems.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Pavilion showcased Malaysia’s efforts in addressing climate change. Panel discussions, dialogues and exhibitions were organized in the space. The topics covered include sustainable finance, involving representatives from several financial institutions in Malaysia including Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). Besides, Malaysian youths and NGOs such as the Global Environment Centre and UNICEF also spoke during the panel sessions.

Environment Secretary calls for action to protect and restore nature at COP27. |

Thérèse Coffey, the UK’s Environment Secretary, has urged for renewed international action on nature as she lays out an ambitious plan for the future of nature at COP's Biodiversity Day on November 16.
Outlining the significance of next month's crucial gathering of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal, she urges governments to convene at this summit and commit to a solid global strategy in combating nature loss.
On Biodiversity Day, the UK government continues to lead global efforts to help lowering global temperatures and build a sustainable future. One of its initiatives entails providing the Big Nature Impact Fund with startup funding of £30 million. The initiative is a brand new public-private fund for the environment in the UK that will spur large private investments in environmental projects. The Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance will receive £12 million from the UK government to safeguard and restore sensitive coastal habitats and communities.

Fight against international wildlife crime stepped up. |

The security, political stability, economy, and natural resources of many nations are now seriously threatened by wildlife crime. It endangers many species' chances of surviving, has the potential to deplete natural resources, and hampers conservation efforts. The UK government has pledged £4 million to the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) to address this dreadful problem. The initiative was announced at the CITES conference in Panama. CITES is a convention on international trade that protects over 38,000 species of wild plants and animals from the effects of international trade.
Due to the increasing demands of both legal and illegal international trade, the UK government is vigilant in its efforts to gain improved safeguards for some of the most threatened species in the world. By enhancing criminal detection, interruption, and incarceration, the new funding will aid in the fight against wildlife crime and support the ICCWC's programming for the following phase.

Sustainability Plans to Help Oil & Gas and Services Companies with Energy Transition. |

The Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister's Department is confident that the newly introduced National OGSE Sustainability Plans (NOSP) would assist oil and gas, services and equipment (OGSE) industries in establishing particular approaches to address energy transition. Deputy Director General (Sectoral) of EPU, Datuk Yatimah Sarjiman, stated that the NOSP would also serve as a reference for companies about the expected sustainable standards for the industry moving ahead.
NOSP which was introduced on 14 November 2022, put forward 11 recommendations to better guide companies towards embarking on the journey to sustainability to address challenges confronting the sector. Looking ahead, the government's plans for OGSE sustainability will be further outlined in the National OGSE Sustainability Roadmap to be developed in 2023 and the National OGSE Sustainability Framework in 2024. Among the suggestions outlined in the NOSP were climate-related risk and potential pathway identification, OGSE-focused sustainability knowledge and training hub, and subsidies for SME training.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) Mohd Yazid Ja’afar also added that MPRC engaged with OGSE ecosystem stakeholders including ministries and government agencies, PETRONAS, Shell, industry associations and OGSE companies to gain a deeper understanding of the issues and challenges faced by the sector as well as explore initial opportunities for the sector to comply with sustainability requirements.

Charterhouse Malaysia was recently awarded with the Eco-Schools Bronze Award, presented by the Eco-Schools Malaysia. They received the award for their excellent contributions to the field of sustainable development education and for their ongoing efforts to raise the school and its neighborhood's sustainability standards.
BMCC would like to extend its congratulations to Charterhouse Malaysia on winning the award and applaud their efforts in developing an environmentally friendly school that is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.

Sunway Berhad | Pristine Laundry. |
|
Sunway is on track to reach its net zero carbon emissions by 2050, by saving up to 200 million litres of water annually and switching to renewable energy sources.
In an effort to promote more environmentally friendly cleaning practices, Sunway recently launched Sunway Pristine Washing in 2020 and has since received a boost in the form of the installation of world-class laundry equipment in the plant. One of Malaysia's largest plants of its sort, the 70,000-square-foot facility is situated in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur.
Along with the laundry equipment, the facility will have solar panels installed on its roof to help Sunway City Kuala Lumpur reduce its carbon footprint. This is a component of Sunway's pledge to have net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.

A recent award was presented to Top Glove by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA) and the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) in recognition of the company's unwavering dedication to the implementation of effective sustainability policies and procedures.
At KeTSA's annual National Energy Awards (NEA) 2022, the company's Factory 30 won a Merit Award in the field of Energy Management. The NEA encourages innovation in local projects and solutions. This is in line with the country's goal to promote the energy sector as the new area for economic growth.
