BMCC Digital Forum Recap:
Malaysia - A Resilient and Preferred Destination for British Exports & Investment

Last Friday, the BMCC in collaboration with the Department for International Trade organised a timely digital forum on the opportunities of doing business in Malaysia. Richard Graham MP, the UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Malaysia was the forum's special guest speaker. Joining him were Arham Abdul Rahman (Deputy CEO 1, Malaysian Investment Development Authority, MIDA), Randeep Mahajan (Managing Director, Weir Minerals Malaysia) and Alex Heaton (CEO, LiveSmart) with BMCC Chairman and CEO & Managing Director of Standard Chartered Malaysia, Abrar A. Anwar moderating the session.

In his opening remarks, Abrar touched on the historical ties between UK and Malaysia, including the recent impact of COVID-19 on businesses. "The pandemic has created various challenges both unforeseen and in-negligible. Restricted movements of international trade, travel bans and cautioned investment decisions from global MNCs to everyday consumers are several instances. However, with challenges comes opportunities. We have discovered new ways of maintaining operations and doing business. The exponential dependency on technology has birthed innovations and forced a new mindset on efficiency and necessity," he said. "Hence, at the Chamber we hope to embrace and contribute to these growing opportunities for the benefit of our business communities," he continued.

Echoing the Chairman's sentiments, Richard Graham added "Whether it's engineering, health, finance, or education, the UK has been with you in one shape or another for a long time. What has really changed is the whole business of digitalisation. Where the UK offers Malaysia something special, is the combination of being a long known and well-trusted partner in many sectors, but also continuously at the forefront of scientific and technology advances we all need in our lives and businesses." Richard went on to illustrate successful cases of UK companies that have recently started up in Malaysia, providing niche products and services to help the local economy, as well as the UK's role in the global race to finding a vaccine for COVID-19.

Representing MIDA, Arham Abdul Rahman covered Malaysia-UK bilateral trade and investment relations, Malaysia's journey towards economic recovery particularly on ongoing reforms for sustainable investments and lastly on Malaysia's future plans beyond the pandemic.

Weir Minerals Malaysia and LiveSmart, fellow BMCC members, represented by Randeep Mahajan and Alex Heaton respectively shared how their companies have adapted and remained resilient throughout the pandemic, adequately exemplifying the influence and presence of both long-standing and newly founded British companies in Malaysia.

The BMCC thanks Richard Graham MP and our fellow speakers for their time and insights with special appreciation to the Department for International Trade for this collaboration.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its socio-economic impact in Malaysia, we also welcome innovative projects that respond to this situation across the above themes. Project selection will take place through an open call to prospective applicants in two stages: 1) Expression of Interest (EOI) to outline how a proposed project responds to the call; and 2) full proposals for those shortlisted at the EOI stage.

UK PACT is funded by the UK Government’s Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of the UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) portfolio. The programme works in partnership with countries with high emissions reduction potential that are eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA) to support them to implement and increase their ambitions for greenhouse gas reductions in line with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the long-term goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit dangerous climate change. Since its inception in 2018, UK PACT has already supported 34 clean growth projects across China, Colombia and Mexico.

The UK PACT Country Programmes respond to demand identified by partner governments by providing grants to implementing partners (NGOs, businesses, academia, etc) who will deliver capacity-building support to address governments’ needs in areas such as green finance, clean energy and energy efficiency, and sustainable mobility. BEIS has partnered with Palladium International to deliver the Country Programmes in China, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico and South Africa. REGISTER HERE
