Flashback: Virtual Roundtable with BMCC Members in Johor

BMCC members in Johor participated in an engaging virtual roundtable with our Chairman, Abrar Anwar, and Deputy Chairman, Andrew Diamond, last week on Monday 23 November 2020. Also present was Executive Director, Jennifer Lopez, along with four other members of the Executive Office. The meeting commenced with brief welcoming remarks from the Chairman and Executive Director, which highlighted the BMCC’s focus to remain agile, relevant and committed to our members in Johor.

An interactive session then followed, with each member pitching in to give their feedback or suggestions in regard to what the Chamber could do better, or should continue doing. It was recommended that Chamber should continue hosting meetings with members in Johor virtually even after the MCO as it would be more efficient and economical. There was also a general consensus to amplify and expand the Chamber’s presence down South by holding regular meetings, and in the future, more frequent networking events. For the time being, however, the Chamber will be embracing this suggestion in the form of digital networking events. To facilitate the focus on BMCC’s presence in Johor, the Chairman announced the appointment of Nicholas Chew from Faizul Hilmy & Chew, a fellow member of BMCC, as Chair of BMCC Johor Chapter.

Also discussed were the various issues, concerns and complications with trade and education that were brought about by Covid-19, such as the closure of the Singapore-Malaysia border and the challenges in hiring and entry of international staff or students. Our Chairman and Executive Director then elaborated on the various advocacy efforts that the Chamber has been working on with respect to said issues. Among them was the Memorandum sent to the Prime Minister of Malaysia regarding the current suspension on the issuance of new international student visas, which was sent on Friday 20 November 2020.

The BMCC would like to thank all the members in Johor for attending and supporting this virtual roundtable and appreciates the views, thoughts, feedback and suggestions put forward. We look forward to continuing this dialogue in the near future.
