On 16 March 2021, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) organised a joint webinar with the BMCC which examined the current trade relationship and opportunities between Malaysia and the UK, and discussed the importance of converting product certification from CE Mark to UKCA.

In his keynote address, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E. Charles Hay MVO, gave an overview of the EU Exit and its implications to UK and Malaysia trade and investments. He said that UK-Malaysia trade is in steady growth and more should be done to improve market access for both countries. He also mentioned that while the EU Exit has no trade impact to Malaysia, some changes do affect Malaysian exporters such as the introduction of UKCA marking and UK Global Tariff (UKGT).

MITI Introduces Safe@Work Initiative for Close Contact Workers

The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has introduced the Safe@Work initiative for companies to isolate workers identified as close contacts of a Covid-19 case.

Safe@Work promotes enhanced public health measures to empower employers in manufacturing and its related services sector to be accountable for containing the pandemic among their workers. It contains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) detailing preventive measures and case management through the creation of a Safe Work Bubble.

In a statement on 18 March 2021, Senior Minister Dato' Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said close contact staff could continue to work under a new “safe work bubble” protocol. This would involve workers in the manufacturing and services sectors, as well as those living in staff quarters, being isolated from the community until they test negative for the virus.

A study on the Covid-19 impact on SEA economy and consumer spending by IPSOS released on 16 March 2021 has revealed that:
  • Most countries are optimistic about income recovery, except for Malaysia and Thailand where income stability sentiment has declined after the resurgence of COVID-19.
  • Spending intent remains muted on large purchases. Behaviour is shifting from "pandemic routine" to "small indulgences".
  • Efficient roll out of vaccination can build economic optimism as in the case of Singapore. Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand need more confidence-building measures.
