Penang ─ A Key Pillar of Malaysia's Trade Home to more than 350 MNCs and 4,000 SMEs and a regional manufacturing hub for several major industries, Penang is a key pillar of Malaysia's trade and a preferred destination among investors.
In 2020, Penang recorded the second highest cumulative manufacturing inflows in its history amounting to RM14.1 billion (versus RM16.9 billion in 2019), even as the COVID-19 pandemic raged on. Seventy-five percent of this amount was made up of foreign direct investment (FDI), making Penang the third highest manufacturing FDI recipient in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the state received domestic direct investment (DDI) of RM3.6 billion in 2020, a testament to Penang’s robust industrial ecosystem as a platform for local players to thrive.
Investors’ continued confidence in Penang as a sustainable investment location is a reflection of the state’s strong fundamentals and versatile ecosystem, which has the capacity and capability to support needs of the industries’ next-generation technologies, products and long-term growth strategies.
Join our distinguished speakers in an informative webinar to find out how the introduction of the Penang 2030 green and smart state vision is set to propel the island to even greater heights as an investment haven, and gain timely insight into the available business opportunities.

Stricter MCO 3.0 Effective 25 May 2021 till 7 June 2021
On 22 May 2021, Senior Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced stricter nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO 3.0) SOPs for the period of 25 May 2021 to 7 June 2021 due to the increase in Covid-19 cases.
Employers in the private sector are to implement the Work From Home (WFH) policy with 40% of the workforce across the board to work from home. Attendance capacity at workplaces including operation and management staff is restricted to 60% only at any time. Those required to work at the office will be subject to reduced hours.
Any non-compliance to the 60% attendance rule at any one time at a work site within the MCO period will automatically result in a 7-day stop work order. No flexibility will be given or appeal entertained.
Official and unofficial functions, face-to-face seminars, workshops, conferences, and activities related to meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) are also prohibited.
In a message to industry players, Dato' Lokman Hakim Ali, Secretary General of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) said there are expectations from all quarters for businesses to play every bit of their role seriously and adhere religiously to the SOPs.

BMCC Presents Members' Views on MCO 3.0 Total Lockdown to the Government
Amid calls of a total lockdown in view of the worsening pandemic situation in Malaysia, the BMCC was invited by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) on 21 May 2021 to participate in a virtual special session between the Prime Minister and the industry, where we presented the collective views of our members and provided feedback to the government on the matter.
Prior to the special session, the BMCC had written a letter to MITI to state our opinions, in which we emphasised our support for enhanced testing, accelerated vaccine rollout and targeted restrictions instead of a full lockdown, whether state-specific or nationwide. |
