Powering Progress: Malaysia Unveiled Phase 2 of National Energy Transition Roadmap |
In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, Malaysia is gearing up for a monumental shift towards a green economy. The National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) stands as a beacon guiding Malaysia through the intricate maze of this energy transformation
On 29 August, Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim inaugurated the NETR, marking a significant step forward in Malaysia's commitment to sustainability. The launch comes alongside Putrajaya's dedication to a substantial RM2 billion "seed fund" to serve as a catalyst for energy transition initiatives. |
Anwar highlighted that while Malaysia's pursuit of sustainability has been steadily gaining momentum, it remains imperative to balance affordable and secure energy sources. The NETR is poised to usher in a transformative era by not only facilitating the creation of well-paying job opportunities but also by invigorating both domestic and foreign investments. Notably, the roadmap aims to safeguard the stability of Malaysia's foreign energy supply.
He also emphasised that the NETR will position Malaysia as a pioneering force in the clean energy sector within the region. Central to the strategy is the establishment of a national energy transmission facility, designed to ensure a smooth flow of financial resources directed towards energy transition projects that may hold slightly lower market viability or yield below-market returns. |
These targeted initiatives encompass a diverse spectrum, including investments in electric vehicle (EV) value chains, hydrogen technologies, and carbon capture and utilisation storage (CCUS) systems. As a testament to the magnitude of this endeavour, Prime Minister Anwar, who also holds the position of Finance Minister, underscored the necessity of a substantial investment amounting to at least RM1.2 trillion between the years 2023 and 2050 to support a responsible and effective energy transition. Outlined within the roadmap are six pivotal energy transition levers, accompanied by an impressive lineup of 10 flagship projects and 50 initiatives. Anwar pointed out that the driving forces behind these projects and initiatives include representatives from the public sector, government-linked companies (GLCs), and industry stakeholders, exemplifying a united, all-encompassing approach to this endeavour. |
In a continued commitment to energy efficiency, Anwar disclosed Putrajaya's plan for an extensive government building retrofit programme. A key component of this initiative is the establishment of an energy service companies (ESCO) platform, facilitating coordination for these projects and fostering public-private sector collaboration in the ESCO market, promoting a more sustainable future.
To support the comprehensive energy planning and policy development integral to this transition, the National Energy Council will be activated. This move ensures meticulous oversight of the NETR implementation progress.
Stay tuned for more updates on Malaysia's journey towards a sustainable energy future with the NETR.
The BMCC will actively support the Malaysian government in their implementation of the National Energy Transition Roadmap. This effort is in line with the Chamber's goal to advance sustainable energy practices and to drive the nation's transition towards a more environmentally friendly and resilient energy landscape. |
