Malaysia Positioned to Lead in AI and Digital Infrastructure |
|
The global race for computing driven by the AI boom is increasing demand for land, energy, and water resources to power next-generation AI data centres. Malaysia, with its abundance of resources and safe geographical location, is well-placed to attract investors seeking diversification.
Policy and Connectivity Advancements Gobind highlighted Malaysia's right policy mix and strong execution over the years, which have positioned the country as a global leader in the digital infrastructure space. Malaysia boasts an award-winning 5G network, managed by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), an agency under the Ministry of Digital. The country’s 5G coverage has reached over 80% of populated areas, with 11.9 million 5G service subscriptions, representing a 35.4% adoption rate in under three years.
Regulatory Initiatives Malaysia is actively involved in shaping digital economy cooperation at the ASEAN level through the highly anticipated Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). DEFA is projected to unlock up to US$2 trillion in value for the ASEAN digital economy by 2030 through harmonised trade rules, interoperability standards, and enhanced collaboration among member nations.
In addition to the new Cyber Security Bill 2024, the Department of Personal Data Protection is in the final stages of drafting amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 [Act 709]. Concurrently, the National Digital Department (JDN) is drafting a national data-sharing bill. These efforts are integral to fostering a holistic regulatory environment that meets the needs of citizens, businesses, and investors in the digital sphere.
Focus on Talent Development To fully realise the potential of the digital economy, the Ministry of Digital emphasises the need for investments in digital infrastructure and a robust regulatory framework to be matched by a strong supply of digitally savvy, future-proof talent. The Ministry is committed to leveraging emerging technologies while mitigating potential risks through a targeted policy and regulatory approach centered on digital infrastructure, regulation, and talent development. This approach aims to propel Malaysia as a digital leader in ASEAN and beyond.
Through these strategic initiatives, Malaysia is poised to lead the digital transformation in the region. The BMCC is prepared to support our members in their endeavours to capitalise on the stage that this sets to cultivate the digital economies of both the UK and Malaysia |
