Malaysia To Lead ASEAN In 2025 Driving Regional Growth And Amplifying Global Voice |
On 11 October, Malaysia's Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim received the ASEAN Chairmanship gavel from the Prime Minister of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, His Excellency Sonexay Siphandone, during the Closing Ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits and Handing Over Ceremony of the ASEAN Chairmanship in Vientiane. With that, Malaysia officially assumes the Chair of ASEAN on 1 January 2025. |
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Anwar unveiled the official logo and theme for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship, “Inclusivity and Sustainability”. He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to upholding ASEAN’s core values and priorities, emphasising that under its chairmanship, the bloc will remain steadfast in maintaining Southeast Asia as a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
He also noted that 2025 will mark the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community and that ASEAN will adopt its Vision 2045—which will chart the shared future of ASEAN for the next two decades.
Prime Minister Anwar also shared Malaysia’s vision for its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, pledging to ensure that no one is left behind. Malaysia aims to enhance regional cooperation through dialogue and collaboration. Guided by ASEAN Centrality, he stressed that Malaysia will work closely with all ASEAN Member States and external partners to champion an open, inclusive, and rules-based regional architecture.
Malaysia has held the ASEAN Chairmanship four times - in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. Malaysia is once again prepared to take on this significant challenge next year, in the face of new global challenges.
BMCC's Commitment The BMCC is committed to supporting Malaysia's leadership in advancing regional economic and trade priorities. We aim to collaborate with our stakeholders to drive impactful dialogues, partnerships, and initiatives that align with ASEAN’s goals under Malaysia’s Chairmanship, particularly in trade facilitation, innovation, and sustainable development. |

We recently hosted an exclusive luncheon with HM's Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, Martin Kent, and the Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia, David Wallace. The meeting was a platform for in-depth discussions on critical issues shaping UK-Malaysia trade relations.
Among the key topics addressed were the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), focusing on how businesses can fully utilise the benefits. Highlights from BMCC's Premium Members Dinner |
We recently hosted an appreciation dinner at the Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill Restaurant, to express our gratitude to our Strategic Partners and Premium Members, whose unwavering support has fueled BMCC’s success.
Our sincere appreciation to Mr David Wallace, Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia, and our Patron, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group, for their presence and support. |
Our Diamond and Platinum partners have been instrumental in sponsoring key events, such as the BMCC Business Excellence Awards, which drew over 500 guests. Their support, along with our Gold, Emerald, and Sterling members, strengthens the UK-Malaysia business relationship. |
During the dinner, we also bid farewell to two long-serving Board members, Bill Addington of Techsol Sdn Bhd and Mohd Hanif Hashim of Petrofac Malaysia, in recognition of their steadfast contributions to the BMCC.
Bill joined the BMCC more than 20 years ago and served as a Board member since 2012. He was instrumental in launching the BMCC Construction & Engineering Network, which has since evolved into the BMCC Built Environment Committee.
Hanif who served on the Board since 2016, played a pivotal role in establishing the BMCC’s Sector Committees, founding the first BMCC Energy Committee. Today, BMCC Sector Committees serve as a robust platform for senior representatives from our member companies within the same sector to collaborate on knowledge-sharing, advocacy, networking, and more. |
We thank you, our Partners and Members for your unwavering support of the BMCC. It is with your support and commitment that we can create a powerful voice for advocacy, shape key industry policies, and foster deeper UK-Malaysia business relations. Together, let's unlock new opportunities, strengthen our network, and drive greater impact in every sector we represent. |

Highlights from our Meet The Author with Nimisha Tailor |
We recently hosted our first 'Meet the Author' event with Nimisha Tailor, the author of The Female Digital Revolution, which explored how technology—through smartphones, digital payments, and health apps—is empowering women to upskill, lead, and start tech companies. Despite these advancements, Tailor highlights a significant gap: not enough technologies are developed "by women" or "for women," resulting in missed opportunities for both the female population and the wider economy. Through powerful stories and research, Tailor urges businesses and governments to recognise women as vital agents of digital change. Her book advocates for increased female participation in the digital economy and calls on leaders across sectors to join this transformative movement, particularly from the education sector and traditionally male-dominated industries. Readers can find The Female Digital Revolution at major online retailers and local bookstores. |

ACCA | A Living Wage - Crucial for Sustainability |
ACCA has recently completed a global research, together with Shift and Forvis Mazars on “A Living Wage – Crucial for Sustainability”. The research highlights a number of key points on the importance for living wages and makes the case that wages should now be part of the sustainability agenda at board and senior management levels.
Access the report through this link. |
Key findings 89% of finance professionals surveyed worldwide recognise the importance of paying a living wage, but only 53% see it as their responsibility to ensure their organisations implement it. This striking disparity is a central finding of this report. - Ethics and human rights are the main reasons why living wages are important. Not paying a living wage should be regarded as an abuse of human rights, not dissimilar to issues such as modern slavery and child labour.
- A business which cannot afford to pay a living wage does not have a sustainable business model. Business models with low margins that need to pay below a living wage in order to be viable need to be critically redesigned on the basis of value.
- The living wage has the potential to act as a major socio-economic multiplier. It provides benefits across the eco-system – workers, employers, economy and governments.
- While 86% of respondents feel their organisation should pay a living wage to own its employees, only 34% believe their organisation should be responsible for encouraging their Tier 1 suppliers to do so.
- From a measurement and reporting perspective, finance and accountancy professionals should stay abreast of developments in sustainability reporting that focus on living wages and human capital. New approaches need to be explored by the profession for how it reports the value of people in corporate reporting.
The social agenda is really trending upwards for businesses and living wages are critical to this. As business leaders, we have a crucial role to play in this space. We must act now, driving ethical change across our organisations and supply chains, and be prepared for emerging reporting standards. If you have any questions on this research please contact Sharath Martin, ACCA Asia Pacific Senior Policy Consultant (Sharath.martin@accaglobal.com). |
