Accelerating Gender Parity with Catherine West MP and BMCC Industry Leaders |
Dear Subscriber,
As part of our continued efforts following International Women’s Day, the BMCC had the privilege of hosting Catherine West MP, UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, for a roundtable discussion on “Accelerating Gender Parity: Women Leadership in Business and Economic Growth”. Held at our office in Menara IQ, TRX, this engaging session brought thought leaders together to explore the role of women in shaping industries, fostering inclusivity, and driving economic progress.
Our network's industry leaders kicked it off, highlighting moments of progress and ongoing challenges in the charge toward gender parity. They shared statistics on Malaysia's healthcare sectors, noting that women make up the majority of nursing professionals and students in healthcare and pharmacy.
This demonstrates an increasing interest in women taking on roles in healthcare and has led to an improvement in medical consultation support for women in the workforce. This also includes support for women undergoing divorce or struggles with mental health.
The discussion also focused on the importance of mentorship and role models, particularly for women in business and STEM. While confidence and experience are key to career growth, access to mentorship remains uneven, with rural students facing fewer opportunities. It was identified that expanding STEM education initiatives should be a nationwide priority.
Our members also stressed the need to break gender stereotypes across industries and implement better work-life balance policies. They called for greater recognition of the responsibilities shouldered by working women, especially single mothers, highlighting that this can be achieved with government support. |
Catherine West MP shared her encouragement for women to pursue leadership roles, especially in finance and environmental policy, as these fields provide essential experience. She reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific, emphasising goals of regional stability, economic partnerships, and benefits from trade initiatives like CPTPP, which promotes equal market access and stronger UK-Malaysia collaboration.
The BMCC extends our gratitude to Catherine West MP, the British High Commission delegation, and all the inspiring women leaders who contributed to this discussion: Nik Tasha Nik Kamaruddin (BMCC Deputy Chair and Chief Brand Strategy Officer of Sunway Group), Natasha Zulkifli (BMCC DEI Network Chair; Director at YTL Construction; and Leader of Women in Rail Malaysia), Dr. Nur Syimah Izzah Abdullah Thani (Head of Corporate Affairs, AstraZeneca), Professor Dr. Vishna Devi Nadarajah (BMCC Higher Education Committee Chair and Provost & CEO of Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia), Sugeeta Bhanoo (Head of Capabilities, BAE Systems), Farah Rosley (Tax Managing Partner, EY Malaysia), and Shenola Gonzales (Head of ICAEW Malaysia). A special thanks goes to Francine Torbettand the team from BHCKL for their collaboration in making this roundtable possible.
As we continue to champion women’s leadership, we remain committed to fostering an environment where female representation and leadership are not the exception, but the norm. |
