Malaysia Paves the Way for Success in Hydrogen Technology Launch of the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap Innovates Future of Energy |
|
In a significant move toward a sustainable and innovative energy future, Malaysia has officially launched its Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). Developed to align with the Low Carbon National Aspiration 2040 under the National Energy Policy 2022-2040, the HETR aims to propel the nation's hydrogen economy forward by establishing a comprehensive ecosystem driven by advanced technology.
This initiative will enable Malaysia to transition to hydrogen as an energy source and achieve decarbonisation goals while fostering sustainable socioeconomic development. |

Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof launched the HETR during the opening ceremony of the 14th International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2023. He emphasised that HETR's successful implementation will position Malaysia to tap into the global green hydrogen market, estimated to be worth at least RM824 billion by 2050.
IGEM 2023, themed "Race Towards Net Zero: Leadership for Climate Action," is set to play a crucial role in advancing the region's net-zero and energy transition agenda. As ASEAN's leading trade event for green technologies and eco-solutions, IGEM boasts a track record of delivering over RM30 billion in business leads and attracting more than 530,000 visitors from over 112 countries since its inception in 2010. This year, IGEM aims to surpass last year's achievements with expectations of 40,000 visitors from 40 countries. |

The HETR outlines five strategic cores designed to foster a robust and competitive local hydrogen ecosystem across value and supply chains. The overarching goal is to position Malaysia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy by 2050. The potential benefits are substantial, with the HETR implementation expected to generate up to RM12.1 billion in revenue and contribute an estimated RM49 billion to RM61 billion to the gross domestic product by 2030. Moreover, this endeavour is projected to create over 45,000 job opportunities within the same timeframe.
The government's commitment to energy transition aligns with efforts to decarbonise the power sector, with plans to increase renewable energy capacity from the existing 25% to 70% by 2050.
The BMCC lauds the Malaysian governments commitment to harness hydrogen energy and technology, and firmly support their dedication toward sustainability in an effort to drive a global shift toward cleaner and more efficient energy solutions. |

We had the grand opportunity to visit GSK's headquarters in Petaling Jaya for a meeting to discuss healthcare, vaccines, and GSK's efforts to recycle medical devices and unused medicines.
