The British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce Reflects on 2023
Proudly Serving our Members for 60 Years and Many More to Come

Dear Subscriber,
image
At last, 2023 is nearing its bittersweet conclusion.

As we wrap up the year and recount all that has happened, we at the cannot help but reminisce on all that we have accomplished and all that we are grateful for.

The year 2023 holds high significance as the BMCC proudly marked its 60th Anniversary, celebrating six decades of UK-Malaysia Business Excellence. Since January 2023, we organised over 35 events including the prestigious 4th Business Excellence Awards and the grand 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner, which attracted 600 guests! These momentous events along with various networking gatherings, roundtable discussions, talks and webinars were meticulously crafted to enrich the experiences of our esteemed members. Other key highlights for the year include the BMCC Energy Forum, BMCC Government Dialogue Series, BMCC , BMCC Climate Action Series and the launch of our ESG Horizons campaign.

For their support and partnership in making our programmes a huge success, we would like to convey our appreciation to all strategic partners for 2023, especially our Top Tier Partners: bp Malaysia, GSK Malaysia, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, HSBC Bank Malaysia and Sunway Medical Centre. We would also like to thank our event partners, the British Council, XCL Education, Shell Malaysia, Bluestar AMG, ABAC, Malaysia Airlines, BMW, and the University of Nottingham.

Another major feather to our cap this year is the transformation of our Annual Malaysia Climate Action Week into a month-long programme. This move was aimed at broadening the focus to encompass the social and governance aspects of Sustainability, meeting the interest of our members. We were able to make this initiative happen with the support of our ESG Horizons Strategic Partner – bp Malaysia.

2023 also saw a focus on strengthening member Committees and Networks, fostering connections, best practices, and industry advocacy, with new committee additions focusing on Healthcare and Built Environment, and the introduction of our DEI, Sustainability, and Talent Networks.

We had several significant engagements with the Malaysian government stakeholders as well as collaborations with the British High Commission, Kuala Lumpur. These included Roundtables engagements with the Minister of Economy Affairs, Minister of Communications & Digital, Deputy Minister of MITI, Deputy Minister of Education the , the launch of the BHC Clean Growth Handbook, signing an MoU with the GITC, and various ministerial-level engagements. We're grateful to all our government stakeholders for their continued diligence and support to make Malaysia a preferred investment and business destination.

The BMCC remains committed to its goals to elevate growth and visibility for UK-Malaysia businesses and partnerships in the interest of our members. As we turn the page to 2024, we look forward with anticipation to the exciting initiatives and collaborations that lie ahead. We have already started work on our 2024 plans with our inaugural , showcasing the best of British and Malaysian education and partnerships available within our BMCC network.

Everything that the BMCC has achieved and would like to achieve is only possible with the support of you- our members. We thank you for your continuous support and look forward to having you as part of this amazing network and Chamber!

Discussion on CPTPP Benefits at MITI Tower
image
The BMCC, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), and the British High Commission of Malaysia joined forces in a historic hybrid session — '' — to unveil the various benefits of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Her Excellency Ailsa Terry, the British High Commissioner to Malaysia; Ms. Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General for Trade; our CEO Jennifer Lopez, and BMCC Board Member and CEO of HSBC Malaysia Dato' Omar Siddiq officiated the event.

The session was moderated by Mr. Patrick Tay, Deals Partner for Economics & Policy from PwC Malaysia, and featured contributions from Ms Sumathi Balakrishnan, Malaysia's CPTPP Chief Negotiator in MITI's Strategic Negotiations Division; Mr. Richard Colley, Director of Trade for BHC Kuala Lumpur, and Tan Sri Yong Poh Kon, Chairman of Royal Selangor.

The discussion shed light on the CPTPP, including Malaysia's ratification in November 2022, and the potential impact that the UK's entry into the trade agreement may deliver. The move allows businesses from the UK and Malaysia to reap the benefits of increased market access, tariff reductions, investment opportunities, regulatory coherence, and economic diversification.

The BMCC is honoured to have been helped to organise this event in a step to strengthen business connections with this revolutionary trade agreement.

10% Sales Tax on Imported, Low Value Goods to Apply from January 1st
image
Starting January 1, a 10% sales tax will be applied to online sales of goods below RM500, targeting items purchased online and imported into Malaysia by finance ministry-registered vendors.

Initially introduced through an amendment to the Sales Tax Act last year, the tax was delayed from its original April 1 implementation.
Anticipating an annual collection of RM200 million, the tax aims to create a fairer landscape for both local and international online sellers, fostering local market empowerment.

Proposed by former finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz in the 2022 budget, the tax has garnered support from groups like the Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta), which sees it as a means to address the "uneven competition" between traditional and online retailers.

President of Samenta William Ng highlighted the tax's potential to level the playing field by ensuring online sellers meet their tax obligations, similar to brick-and-mortar stores.

With over 150,000 vacancies in the health and social care sector in the U.K, it's crucial to address the global healthcare challenges that are intensifying this shortage. And a Skills for Health Report tells us that within the next 10 years, we will need to fill almost 500k vacancies to keep up with our aging workforce and population. The demand for qualified personnel worldwide is outpacing the available workforce, making effective training a key factor in addressing this challenge.

This webinar is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their employability prospects within the U.K. and globally. Organisations within in the healthcare and education sectors will also benefit as we delve into skills solutions to tackle the pressing issue of workforce shortages.

We are delighted to have industry experts sharing their insights, including DR Ram Senasi MRCS FRCR, Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Radiologist (or simply Ram, as he prefers), Steve Morris LCG's Group Commercial Director and training and employment solutions specialist, and Craig Wade, Senior Health, Science and Social Care Manager from the awarding organisation NCFE; who, together, will bring a wealth of knowledge about the industry.
