Malaysia Passed Cyber Security Bill 2024 |
The Cyber Security Bill 2024 was successfully passed on 27 March by the Dewan Negara (State Council). This significant step underscores the Malaysian government's commitment to bolstering the nation's cyber security infrastructure. |
Aim of the Cyber Security Bill The primary objective of the Cyber Security Bill is to fortify the country's cyber security framework by implementing specific measures, standards, and protocols to effectively mitigate cyber threats.
Importance of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo emphasised the crucial role of the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) in sectors such as government, banking, transportation, defense, and information technology. These sectors are often at risk of being targeted for cyber attacks, which can pose significant risks to national security and stability.
Risk-Based Approach Gobind highlighted the Bill's adoption of a risk-based approach to cybersecurity, which focuses on proactively identifying and addressing potential threats. He emphasised the need for vigilant measures and countermeasures to safeguard CNII entities from cyber threats.
Consideration of Emerging Technologies The Cyber Security Bill acknowledges the importance of emerging technologies like blockchain while also recognising associated cybersecurity risks. Gobind stressed the necessity of cautious implementation and protective controls to mitigate potential threats effectively.
Having passed both the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat, the Cyber Security Bill 2024 represents a crucial milestone in enhancing Malaysia's cyber resilience. By addressing emerging threats and fortifying critical infrastructure, the Malaysian government aims to safeguard national security and promote digital trust and stability.
