Malaysia's Minimum Wage Increase: What Employers and Workers Need to Know |
Dear Subscriber,
As of 1 February 2025, the Minimum Wage Order has officially been enforced, increasing the minimum monthly salary from RM1,500 to RM1,700. |
Who will this impact? Employers with five or more workers, along with professional sector employers, have officially implemented the new wage structure. Meanwhile, smaller businesses with fewer than five employees have until 1 August 2025 to make the necessary adjustments, ensuring a smooth transition for all.
The Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) stated that the minimum wage adjustment is part of broader efforts to enhance worker earnings, complementing initiatives such as the Progressive Wage Policy and skills training programmes to boost productivity and income levels. Importantly, MOHR emphasised that RM1,700 is a baseline, and skilled professionals and graduates should continue to receive salaries that reflect their expertise and qualifications.
Malaysia's Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong is championing ongoing discussions with businesses and employees to fine-tune the policy and explore region-specific wage levels to ensure fairness across different economic landscapes.
The BMCC welcomes this wage increase as a positive step toward a more progressive and prosperous Malaysia, where fair pay can enhance living standards and foster a motivated workforce. We encourage employers to see this as an opportunity to invest in their teams, driving long-term business growth and sustainability.
