Malaysian Government Accelerates Green Initiatives to Reach Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 |
The Malaysian Government has committed to accelerating the implementation of three key initiatives — the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP), the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR), to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, YB Tuan Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that new policies, including the National Climate Change Bill (RUUPIN), will also be fast-tracked to meet this ambitious target.
This decision was made during the 5th Meeting of the National Climate Change Action Council (MTPIN), chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The council also agreed to form a National Decarbonisation Committee to oversee the implementation of these initiatives.
YB Tuan Nik Nazmi presented three key papers to MTPIN, outlining the nation's net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission target for 2050, derived from the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Development Direction and Action Plan, and the Long Term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LT-LEDS). The council approved the National Climate Change Policy 2.0 to support these efforts alongside initiatives such as the RUUPIN, the National Adaptation Plan, and the National Carbon Market Policy. Other matters discussed include plans for the Malaysia Pavilion at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, and COP-30 in Brazil in 2025.
Financial sector responses to climate change were also highlighted by Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission, led by the Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3). This initiative reflects the government’s comprehensive approach to reducing GHG emissions, building resilience against climate change effects, and promoting sustainable, low-carbon development.
Additionally, YB Tuan Nik Nazmi shared insights from his recent visit to Bangkok, where he met with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, General Phatcharavat Wongsuwan. The Thai government expressed support for Malaysia's 2025 ASEAN chairmanship and agreed to collaborate on carbon market mechanisms.
This commitment to accelerated action underscores Malaysia's dedication to addressing climate change and fostering a sustainable future.

Last week's BMCC's Excellence Showcase with BSI |
Last week, we had a stimulating afternoon at the latest BMCC Excellence Showcase with BSI! Themed "Driving Sustainability Impacts with International Standards and ESG Trends in Malaysia and Globally," the roundtable session provided valuable insights into current sustainability practices and global ESG trends. |
The speakers explored issues and challenges in companies transitioning toward carbon neutrality and presented solutions through the roundtable discussion and adherence to the standards handily prepared by BSI. They delivered presentations on debunking myths surrounding carbon, the nuances of ESG regulations in APAC regions, and addressed the demand for transparency, accountability, and responsible business practices.
In discussions to drive carbon neutrality and ESG excellence in alignment with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, the roundtable yielded suggestions including shifting to a top-down approach, adjusting frameworks for ministries and agencies, and monitoring the development of relevant technologies. |
We're glad to have organised this session with BSI, to aid and accelerate the sustainability journey of many organisations.
