Dear Subscriber, |

Bank Negara Malaysia Reveals 2023 Annual Report |
|
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) released its Annual Report 2023 alongside two flagship publications - Economic and Monetary Review 2023, and Financial Stability Review for 2nd Half 2023.
This report offers insights into the nation's economy and financial system, current and potential risks, and actions that the government will be taking to manage them.
Featured here are 10 key takeaways from the reports: - Economic Growth Outlook: BNM maintains its forecast for Malaysia's economy to grow by 4-5% in 2024, supported by resilient domestic expenditure and potential exports recovery.
- Ringgit Performance: Despite a 3.9% depreciation against the US dollar in 2023, the ringgit remains fundamentally undervalued and vulnerable to advanced economies' monetary policy trajectory.
- Inflation Expectations: Headline inflation is projected to stay moderate, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) forecasted to rise by 2-3.5% in 2024.
- Current Account Surplus: BNM expects Malaysia’s current account surplus to improve in 2024 after hitting a 26-year low in 2023, driven by a higher goods surplus.
- Unemployment Rates: Unemployment rates have declined to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 3.4% in 2023, with stabilisation anticipated around the historical average of 3.3% in 2024.
- Employment Growth: High-touch services subsectors, including food and beverages, accommodation, and wholesale and retail trade, were major drivers of overall employment growth in 2023.
- Banking System Resilience: Malaysia’s banking system remains well-capitalised and resilient against liquidity shocks, with strong liquidity and funding positions.
- Earnings Moderation: Banks' earnings were moderated due to higher funding costs narrowing interest margins.
- Online Financial Scams: The National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) attended to 66,997 calls on online financial scams in 2023, marking a five-fold increase from 2022.
- Suspicious Transaction Reports: BNM received 317,435 suspicious transaction reports (STRs) in 2023, a 31% increase from 2022, reflecting heightened vigilance against financial crimes.
These insights provide valuable perspectives on Malaysia's economic and financial landscape and have the potential to guide the BMCC's members and stakeholders in navigating challenges and opportunities ahead. |

Every glass was raised as we bid farewell to the cherished Chair of the BMCC's Board of Directors, Mark Arthun. On this spectacular night, we laughed and shared as we reminisced on Mark's invaluable and impassioned journey in leading the Chamber to where it is today. We celebrated his charming leadership, keen mind for business, and years of experience that we have no doubt will carry him far beyond these horizons. |

A big thank you to EQ Hotel and team, for making this celebration extra memorable at Blue. We also appreciate the presences and words offered to Mark's success by our esteemed guests of honour: Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG, British High Commissioner to Malaysia; BMCC Deputy Chair Mak Joon Nien, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, who will be taking up the mantle as Interim Chair; and Board Member Martin Haeger MBE, Director of HL Design Group. |
