ESG: Unveiling the Crucial Role of Governance
Dear Subscriber,

We are finally at the last leg of ESG Horizons, our month-long initiative that redefines corporate responsibility and champions sustainable leadership — seamlessly bridging the climate action gap and exploring the wider spectrum of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors.
This week, as we 'Reflect, Restrategise, and Reinforce' our efforts on ESG, we were reminded by our member,  of the crucial importance of Governance, the frequently neglected aspect of ESG.

What we need to know: Governance plays a significant impact on corporate decision-making and risk management, garnering attention and advocacy by lawmakers, business organisations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Malaysia and globally.
image
Governance
Governance focuses on how organisations are managed, directed, and controlled. It encompasses the framework, policies, and practices that guide decision-making processes and ensure accountability to shareholders and stakeholders. ESG factors play a vital role in evaluating an organisation's commitment to ethical conduct, transparency, and risk management.

Unlocking Insights with ESG Metrics
ESG metrics serve as a powerful lens, offering invaluable insights into an organisation's governance landscape. From assessing board effectiveness and executive compensation to scrutinising shareholder rights and corporate culture, ESG metrics paint a comprehensive picture. By embracing ESG principles, organisations can fortify their foundations for long-term value creation, effective risk management, and meaningful stakeholder engagement.

It is a valuable tool in assessing an organisation’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. In governance, they quantify leadership structures, board independence, risk management, and legal compliance. Integrating ESG metrics in Malaysia allows organisations to monitor performance, benchmark against peers, identify improvement areas, and enhance governance practices.

Towards Responsible Business Practices
Investors and stakeholders are increasingly recognising the importance of ESG performance when making investment decisions. ESG metrics offer a holistic perspective on an organisation's risks and opportunities, surpassing traditional financial indicators. This consideration enables stakeholders to make informed decisions aligned with their values, supporting sustainable and responsible businesses in Malaysia. Integrating ESG into governance also enhances long-term value creation, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.

Together with our member ABAC™, we are actively working towards reshaping the business landscape with integrity and sustainable growth. Through this thought leadership, we hope to inspire a new wave of responsible practices that will not only meet today's standards but also set the stage for a resilient and sustainable future.

Together, let's continue to embrace ESG principles, elevate governance standards, and contribute to a business landscape that thrives on integrity and sustainable growth.

Sarawak First in Malaysia to Enact Anti-Climate Change Law
image
The Sarawak Legislative Assembly achieved a significant milestone by passing the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Bill on Monday, making Sarawak the first Malaysian state with legislation dedicated to addressing climate change.
According to Deputy Minister Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, the bill was designed to safeguard Sarawak's environment, aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Key measures include annual carbon emission reports from registered businesses, carbon emission thresholds, and the imposition of a carbon levy for non-compliance.

The bill also establishes a robust system for project verification, enabling Sarawak to trade or sell carbon credits and potentially generate revenue. The state government plans to create an advisory panel on climate change and related matters following the bill's passing, reinforcing Sarawak's commitment to becoming a global clean energy leader.

Repurposing of Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) into premium palm-based engineered wood products
  • IOI Palm Wood, operating as "OnCore", is a sustainable initiative transforming oil palm waste into environmentally friendly palm wood panels.
  • This approach traps Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional timber.
  • By lessening the demand for natural forest resources, IOI Palm Wood plays a role in conserving habitats and ecosystems.

Rethinking on Waste Management
  • Transforming Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) into engineered wood products using OPT offcut as biofuel for energy plants is a significant, and environmentally responsible approach that reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Reducing GHG Emissions from Decomposition
  • By transforming OPT into engineered wood products and using it as biofuel instead of leaving it to decompose into methane, the release of GHGs is minimised. This action aligns with global efforts to reduce methane emissions.
