GTCC Tourism & Hospitality Committee Webinar

Moderator: Oliver Schnatz, Chair of GTCC Tourism & Hospitality Committee and

Director, GTCC Board of Directors

Wednesday, 2 March 2022

14:00 - 15:00 hrs. (Thailand time)

via Zoom Webinar

Over 3 million jobs have been lost in Thailand's hospitality & tourism sector since the Covid-19 outbreak in 2019, according to the Bangkok Post. Many of the people who have lost their jobs have entered into new industries, moved back upcountry with their family or started their own business. While Thailand expects to welcome back international tourists in 2022 at around 50% of the total number recorded before the pandemic (40 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2019) and rise to 80% of that in 2023, it is predicted that the hospitality and tourism sector will be facing a huge challenge in staff shortage.

Join our first event organised by the GTCC Tourism & Hospitality Committee to share and learn from other members on the perspectives towards key issues in the hospitality and tourism industry. The discussion will cover the following topics:

  • Staff shortage in the hospitality industry and how to address this challenge
  • Way forward for Thai Tourism in 2022 and beyond. What will be the strategies of the government and TAT?
  • Thailand Pass, what are the main concerns?

About GTCC Tourism & Hospitality Committee

The tourism and hospitality industry in Thailand accounts for approximately 18% of the GDP, with 12% comes from international tourists. In 2019, around 40 million international visitors came to Thailand for leisure and business purposes. MICE is an important sector in Thailand. It contributes to the development of other industries through planning and executing of international events which attract international business experts, academics and investors to engage with their partners in Thailand. It also initiates collaboration between different organisations, both public and private; and also draws investment to basic infrastructure. The tourism and hospitality industry has been and still is heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The industry has to prepare for a safe and sustainable recovery.

Around 10% of the GTCC members belong to the tourism and hospitality industry. Therefore, the GTCC Tourism & Hospitality is established to support the members with the objectives below.

  • Providing information and expertise on all tourism and hospitality related topics
  • Sharing of knowledge and experiences
  • Representing the interests of GTCC members in the tourism and hospitality sector
  • Collaboration with the Thai government , Ministry of Tourism , Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and organisations like Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB)and Thailand international Cooperation Agency (TICA)

The committee will organise quarterly events, establish contacts to the Thai government and relevant partners in the tourism and hospitality industry, and report on tourism and hospitality topics and committee activities in the GTCC e-UPDATE and at GTCC board meetings.
