Terrell A. Blount, MPA’s Post

LAUNCH DAY!!!! I'm pleased to announce that the Formerly Incarcerated College Graduates Network created a pledge to use human-centered, person-first language for individuals, organizations, members of the media, corrections and law enforcement agencies, and practically anyone else to sign. The pledge is not something for you to simply say you signed--it is a public declaration and internal commitment to humanizing directly impacted people in your writing, speech, and treatment of such individuals and spreading the knowledge to others. More importantly, this move will impact how we determine whom we work with moving forward on an individual and organizational level. No longer will I be caught off guard participating in an event--virtual or in person--by someone claiming to be dedicated to this movement for system-impacted people but can't see why viewing them as an "inmate" or "ex-offender" is contradictory to the foundation of this work which is getting the individual to see themselves as something other than (e.g., a student, scholar, or...a person). Nor will I agree to an interview with a journalist who wants to dehumanize us in their headline and sensationalize our trauma for a few clicks and views. It's not happening anymore. I welcome all those who believe in humanizing those with legal or penal system involvement to take the pledge and share it with your network! https://lnkd.in/gMjqfPw7 #justice #prison #prisonreform #education #college #careers #ficgn #collegeinprison

Thank you Terrell. Hopefully this will instill confidence for returning citizens. And maybe that flashing neon sign on our foreheads will disappear.

I took the pledge, because words are powerful. Everyone should take the pledge if you want system-impacted people, like me, to succeed. The first step to impowerment is how we define those around us. #justice #prison #prisonreform #education #college #careers #ficgn #collegeinprison
